Pain for Gain

“Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” —Psalm 10:1 (NIV)

The Question in Our Pain
When we are facing intense trials or pain, it’s natural to feel as if God is distant or absent. The psalmist, David, in Psalm 10:1, raises a common human question: “Why, Lord, do you stand far off?” This is a question that many of us have asked during times of hardship, when it feels like God is hiding or not answering our cries. Pain and suffering have a way of clouding our perspective, making it difficult to sense God’s presence, let alone understand the purpose behind our struggles.

A Deeper Purpose in Pain
Although it may seem as though God is far away, the Bible assures us that He is always near, especially in our suffering. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” In times of trouble, when we feel most abandoned, God is at work in ways we might not immediately understand. The pain we experience is not pointless. While we may not fully comprehend the reasons for our suffering in the moment, Scripture assures us that God uses our pain for growth, for refining, and for drawing us closer to Him.

Growth Through Adversity
James 1:2-4 encourages us to consider it “pure joy” when we face trials because the testing of our faith produces perseverance, and perseverance leads to maturity. The pain we endure in this life has the potential to cultivate spiritual strength, character, and depth in our relationship with God. Just as a muscle grows stronger when it is stretched and strained, so our faith is strengthened when we go through hardship. In these moments of difficulty, God is not absent—He is shaping us into the person He has called us to be. Pain becomes a tool in His hands for our spiritual gain.

The Strength Found in Surrender
When we face pain, it is easy to become consumed with questions like, “Why, Lord?” However, rather than focusing on the reasons for our suffering, we can choose to focus on God’s faithfulness. Even when we feel distant from Him, He is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Our faith grows when we choose to surrender to His will, trusting that He is sovereign, even in our pain. The key is not understanding every reason for our trials, but choosing to trust that God will use them for His glory and our growth.

A Prayer for Strength in Pain
Lord,
In my pain, help me to trust that You are not distant but are using this trial to shape me into the person You want me to be. When I ask, “Why, Lord?” remind me of Your faithfulness and Your purpose in my pain. Help me to surrender my struggles to You, knowing that You are at work even when I don’t understand. Strengthen my faith through adversity, and help me to see the growth and gain that come from trusting You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
