Opelousas Facility Expands to Help Men Rebuild Their Lives

A New Foundation for Second Chances
Opelousas is witnessing a powerful new beginning as The Refinery Mission breaks ground on a 57-bed dormitory designed to expand its reach to men seeking transformation. For years, this Christian emergency and transitional housing facility has been a refuge for those emerging from addiction, incarceration, or homelessness. As Executive Director Johnny Carriere puts it, “We take guys from jails, prisons, rehab hospitals — even straight off the streets.”

One such life transformed is that of Alberto Gatica, who spent a decade behind bars before finding healing at The Refinery. “I am living proof,” Gatica shared. “You must be broken to be fixed.” His story echoes the biblical promise that God can take shattered lives and rebuild them with purpose. Once hopeless and filled with self-hate, Gatica now walks in newness of life—sober, employed, and restored in his relationships.

Building Hope with Every Brick
The expansion, a $3 million project with $2.5 million already raised, is more than just a construction effort—it’s a testament to faith in action. Proverbs 24:3 reminds us, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.” The new facility will provide not just shelter, but structure, discipline, and spiritual growth. Residents engage in Bible studies, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and prepare to reintegrate into society with renewed purpose.
