LAFAYETTE, LA — In a culture where sweets and sodas are often a go-to for late-night studying or high-energy days, new research from the University of California, Los Angeles, offers a sobering reminder: too much sugar may do more harm than good—especially to the brain. The animal study revealed that a high-fructose diet, such as one heavy in sodas and processed foods, can impair memory, slow thinking, and hinder learning in just six weeks.
God Calls Us to a Mind of Clarity
Scripture tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind.” To honor that gift, we must care for our brains through the choices we make each day. Scientists have long warned of the dangers of sugar to physical health—diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver disease among them. Now, we also see how sugar affects mental function, especially when consumed excessively.
Wisdom in What We Eat
There is hope in better choices. The same UCLA study found that omega-3 fatty acids—found in foods like salmon, flaxseed, and walnuts—may protect the brain from sugar’s damaging effects. As Proverbs 3:21-22 advises, “My son, do not lose sight of these—keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.” God has provided foods that nourish not just the body, but the mind as well.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father,
Grant us wisdom in what we consume and how we care for the minds You have given us. Help us make choices that honor You and protect our health. Bless every student and worker seeking clarity and focus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
