A Century of Courage Remembered
MCKINLEYVILLE, CA — In a moving moment of history and honor, 100-year-old World War II fighter pilot, Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Joe Peterburs, returned to the skies in the same kind of plane he once flew in battle. Taking the controls of a P-51 Mustang, Peterburs relived the memories of his 49 combat missions that shaped not only his life but the freedom of generations. “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31).
A Legacy of Service
Peterburs’ service stretched beyond World War II, where he endured capture by German forces and made a daring escape. He later flew 76 missions during the Korean War and served into the Vietnam era, retiring as a colonel in 1969. His remarkable journey of resilience and bravery testifies to the courage of those who placed service above self. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).
An Inspiration for Generations
The commemorative flight, organized by “Rumble Over the Redwoods,” brought joy and tears to those who watched. As the Mustang rolled through the sky, Peterburs waved from the cockpit — a centenarian veteran reminding all that the spirit of perseverance never fades. After landing, he encouraged future generations: “Do your best in whatever you endeavor.” His words echo the wisdom of Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”
A Prayer for Our Heroes
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the courage of veterans like Col. Peterburs, who remind us of the price of freedom. Bless our service members past and present, grant them peace, and inspire us to live with the same strength and devotion. Amen.
