Strength in the Face of Disaster
KERRVILLE, TX — Just days after catastrophic floods devastated their hometown, the Texas Voodoo girls softball team demonstrated extraordinary courage by traveling seven hours to Oklahoma City to compete in the USA National Gold tournament. The July 4 floods claimed at least 132 lives and left more than 100 people missing, yet these young athletes showed resilience and determination. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
Faith and Perseverance on the Field
First baseman Macy Cobb explained, “We were determined to go because even through all the hardships we still wanted to represent the hill county community.” Right fielder Bailey King said the tournament gave them a needed reprieve: “It helped take our minds off the floods happening in our hometown.” Shortstop Caydence Barbo added, “Even with all the heartbreak and devastation, we wanted to show that we could do it.” Their steadfast spirit reflects James 1:12: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
Community Support and Recognition
USA Softball of Texas honored the team with “Kerrville Strong, Texas Strong” shirts, celebrating their grit and heart. Pitcher and second baseman Kylie Traub said, “Our community has come together and we have been supported in so many ways.” Catcher Callie Phillips shared, “Even though we have suffered an immeasurable amount of pain and tragedy, we will stay strong and rise above all of this.” Their unity and determination echo Ecclesiastes 4:12: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
A Prayer for Kerrville
Heavenly Father, we lift up the Kerrville community and these courageous young athletes. Bring healing to families affected by the floods, strengthen the bonds of the community, and guide them with Your love. May these girls’ perseverance inspire all to stand together with faith, hope, and resilience. Amen.
