The Quiet Sin That Tears Down
“He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips” (Proverbs 20:19). Words carry power—power to build or destroy. While many believers would never dream of committing open sin, gossip and flattery often sneak through unnoticed, leaving subtle but devastating damage in their wake. What begins as “sharing a concern” can quickly become character assassination clothed in spirituality.
The Dangers of Gossip and Flattery
Backbiting and gossip are described in Scripture as acts of betrayal. The Hebrew meaning of “backbite” paints the picture of a spy—someone who gathers private information to spread among others. Gossip often disguises itself in acceptable conversation: “I just thought you should know,” or “Let’s pray for them.” But James warns us, “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity… it defiles the whole body” (James 3:6). Likewise, flattery may sound kind, but it’s a polished form of deceit—saying to someone’s face what we’d never say behind their back. Both tear down rather than build up.
Speaking Life, Not Destruction
As followers of Christ, we are called to use our words as instruments of grace. Ephesians 4:29 reminds us, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.” True love refuses to gossip, refuses to flatter, and refuses to harm the reputation of others. Instead, it speaks truth with humility and encouragement.
A Prayer for Pure Speech
Lord, guard our tongues and purify our hearts. Help us resist the temptation to gossip or flatter. Let our words reflect Your truth, bringing healing and unity instead of harm. Teach us to speak with love, honesty, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
