Highland Baptist Lady Bears Triumph in Faith-Filled Five-Set Thriller

A Battle of Endurance and Belief
EUNICE, La. — The Highland Baptist Christian School Lady Bears volleyball team displayed heart, faith, and determination Monday night in a thrilling five-set victory over St. Edmund High School. Traveling to Eunice for the opening round of the LHSAA Division V playoffs, the No. 18 seed Lady Bears stunned the No. 15 St. Edmund Blue Jays in a nail-biting 3–2 win (23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 15-13). For the players, coaches, and families, the victory was more than a score—it was a testimony of perseverance, unity, and the power of faith under pressure. The Lady Bears now advance to face powerhouse Westminster Christian Academy in the regional round Thursday.

Faith Through Adversity: A Season of Challenges
For head coach Melissa Trahan, the win reflected the resilience that has defined her team’s journey. “We’ve had a hard time finding our groove,” Trahan said, noting how illnesses and medical challenges kept the team from settling into a consistent lineup. “But once we got everyone back, they’ve been fighting together again, and you saw that tonight.” Her words echo Romans 5:3–4, “We glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.” Despite setbacks, the Lady Bears refused to let discouragement dictate their story. Each player learned to lean not only on one another but on the strength that comes from God.

From Setbacks to Comebacks: The Heart of a Champion
The match was a dramatic battle from start to finish. After losing the first and third sets, Highland Baptist found themselves trailing 2–1 and on the verge of elimination. But their faith-fueled determination never wavered. “We’ve practiced that,” Coach Trahan shared. “We put one side down eight or nine points in practice so they learn to fight back. That mindset carried us tonight.” Her strategy—and the team’s spirit—reflect Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

In the decisive fifth set, the Lady Bears trailed again, but rallied to tie and then seize the final two points, winning 15–13. When the last ball hit the court, the team erupted in tears and cheers—a moment of triumph that embodied the victory of faith over fear.

Unity, Strength, and the Power of Belief
This season has been more than just competition for the Lady Bears—it’s been about family, faith, and perseverance. The team started with seven seniors but lost one to a medical issue. Instead of allowing heartbreak to divide them, the players grew closer. “They decided, ‘We’re not losing a teammate—we’re going to be six strong,’” Trahan said. Their strength reflects Ecclesiastes 4:12, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Their unity became their greatest weapon on and off the court.

Looking Ahead with Faith and Determination
As Highland Baptist prepares to face No. 2 seed Westminster Christian, the Lady Bears know they’re stepping onto the court not just with skill, but with belief. “Anybody can be beaten on any night,” Trahan said. “It just comes down to who fights harder.” For these young women, that fight is rooted in faith—a reminder that victory doesn’t always begin on the scoreboard, but in the heart.
