In a world where modern pressures often overshadow tradition, one Louisiana family continues to shine as a testimony of faith, perseverance, and multigenerational calling. On Nov. 19, the Rotary Club of Abbeville presented its Farmer of the Year Award to Kelsi and Amanda Duhon—an honor that not only acknowledges their agricultural excellence but also their commitment to glorifying God through their work.
As Scripture reminds us, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). For the Duhons, farming is not merely an occupation; it is a God-given purpose.
A Family Legacy Anchored in God’s Provision
Raised on a sixth-generation sugarcane and cattle farm in northern Vermilion Parish, Kelsi Duhon continues the heritage handed down through generations. His wife, Amanda, brings her own roots—first-generation row crop farmer and fourth-generation cattle rancher—creating a powerful partnership both in marriage and agriculture.
Working together, the Duhons manage a sprawling 980-acre operation dedicated to sugarcane, hay, and cattle. Their children—Wyatt, Walker, and Wiley—are already growing into their roles on the land, each discovering their God-shaped place in the family calling.
“It’s God and then it’s family,” Amanda said, reflecting on the values that drive their home and their farm. Her words echo Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Raising Future Farmers With Purpose and Passion
The Duhon boys, even at their young ages, are embracing the agricultural lifestyle with enthusiasm and individuality. One dreams of being a farmer, one a veterinarian, and another can barely be persuaded to leave the tractor cab—a sign that the next generation is already taking root.
Rotarian Mark Shirley highlighted the significance of their dedication: “Kelsi and Amanda represent the very best of Louisiana agriculture. They are hardworking, humble, and deeply committed to their family, their farm, and their community.”
Their humility and stewardship call to mind Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”
Leaders Beyond the Farm Gate
Beyond their home fields, the Duhons actively invest in promoting agriculture statewide. Kelsi serves on the board for Vermilion Farm Bureau, while Amanda chairs the Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee for Lafayette Parish. Together, they serve on the Louisiana Farm Bureau’s state-level Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee.
“This is the future of agriculture,” Shirley said proudly, affirming the couple’s impact on younger generations and the wider agricultural community.
Extension agent Hilton Waits added another meaningful connection: “They’re both graduates of the Vermilion 4-H program,” a testament to their lifelong commitment to agricultural learning and service.
A Community Celebrates Its Servant-Leaders
Receiving the Rotary’s recognition moved the Duhons deeply. “It is definitely an honor,” Amanda said. “We’re so thankful to be part of this community.”
Their gratitude reflects Psalm 67:6: “The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.” Their lives demonstrate that when faith and farming intertwine, the fruit nourishes an entire region.
Prayer for the Duhon Family and the Farming Community
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the Duhon family and for every farmer who works the land with faith, endurance, and love. Bless their crops, their livestock, their home, and their future. Strengthen all agricultural families across our region—may Your hand of protection guide them through every season. Let their work be a testimony of Your goodness and provision. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
