A Hard-Fought Victory for Faith and Determination
CROWLEY, La. — In a thrilling Division II Select playoff matchup Friday night, No. 2 Notre Dame rallied for a 28–19 victory over No. 18 De La Salle, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and trust in God’s guidance. The game featured multiple lead changes and standout performances, with Notre Dame overcoming a late second-half deficit to secure the win and advance to the quarterfinals.
This contest embodies Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” The Pioneers’ comeback highlights how faith, focus, and perseverance guide young athletes through challenges both on and off the field.
De La Salle Strikes Early
De La Salle jumped out to a 7–0 lead in the opening quarter, powered by Robert Lewis, who scored on an 18-yard run, capping an eight-play, 64-yard drive. Lewis finished with 168 rushing yards on 18 carries, keeping the Cavaliers competitive throughout the night.
Despite the early deficit, Notre Dame responded immediately. Quarterback Drew LeJeune connected with Brice Duhon on a 55-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7–7 after Ty Savant’s extra point. The early back-and-forth showcased the teams’ talent, preparation, and composure under pressure.
Notre Dame Rallies Through Half
De La Salle regained the lead in the second quarter as Alericq Valetine found Garen Lewis for a 35-yard touchdown. Yet Notre Dame remained patient and determined. With one minute left before halftime, Joachim Bourgeois scored, giving the Pioneers a 14–13 lead at the break.
This sequence reminds us of Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” The Pioneers’ ability to stay focused and maintain faith in God’s plan exemplifies the perseverance and resilience that sports can teach.
A Second-Half Comeback Fueled by Faith
De La Salle started the second half strong, taking a 19–14 lead on an 8-yard touchdown by Eamon Williams. But Notre Dame answered swiftly. Just 26 seconds later, Bourgeois broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run, regaining the lead. He later added a third touchdown from 7 yards out, while Savant’s extra points ensured a two-score advantage, sealing the game at 28–19.
Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” The Pioneers’ commitment to discipline, teamwork, and faith guided them to a hard-earned victory.
Looking Ahead: Quarterfinals and Beyond
With the win, Notre Dame (9–2) will host No. 7 Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy in the quarterfinals. The Pioneers previously defeated Lafayette Renaissance 38–19 earlier this season, setting the stage for another intense playoff showdown. Meanwhile, De La Salle finishes the year at 5–7, proud of their effort and perseverance.
1 Corinthians 9:24 encourages: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Notre Dame continues its playoff journey, running with discipline, courage, and faith.
A Prayer for the Teams and Community
Heavenly Father, we lift up the Notre Dame Pioneers, De La Salle Cavaliers, their coaches, families, and supporters. Bless their efforts, keep them safe, and guide their hearts in competition. May each game reflect Your love, teach perseverance, and build character. Strengthen these young athletes to honor You in victory and defeat. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
