Community Strong Together Spotlight: Chief David Anderson — Serving Carencro with Integrity, Vision, and Community Partnership

In communities built on trust, service, and collaboration, leaders who embody those values make all the difference. Community Strong Together is honored to spotlight one such leader: Chief David Anderson of the Carencro Police Department—a dedicated law enforcement professional whose career reflects steadfast commitment to public safety, community partnership, and servant leadership.

Chief Anderson’s journey in law enforcement began nearly three decades ago. He started his career in 1988 with the Carencro Police Department, serving the city where he would later become its Chief. After a year with Carencro, he continued his service with the Lafayette City Police Department, demonstrating early his desire to protect and serve in larger urban environments. In 1999 he joined the Louisiana State Police, where he served with distinction across Patrol, Special Operations, and Public Affairs—as spokesperson for the agency—and rose to the rank of Sergeant with supervisory responsibilities. Over his career, Chief Anderson has completed more than 3,900 hours of specialized law enforcement training and has been twice honored as the Troop I Louisiana State Troopers Association Trooper of the Year. He also had the unique honor of being selected to represent the Louisiana State Police in Washington, D.C., for National Police Memorial Week—an occasion that recognizes law enforcement sacrifice and service.

On July 10, 2016, after a remarkable career with Louisiana State Police, Anderson retired—but his call to serve did not end. The very next day, he was appointed interim Police Chief of Carencro. By January 2017, he had qualified and ran unopposed for Chief of Police, a testament to the confidence the community placed in his leadership. In 2018 he again qualified and ran unopposed, continuing to serve with humility and dedication. Today, Chief Anderson leads a department of more than two dozen sworn officers and reserve officers whose mission is to serve the public with respect, trust, integrity, and professionalism.

Chief Anderson’s philosophy mirrors the Community Strong Together belief that law enforcement is not separate from the community, but an integral part of it. Under his leadership, the Carencro Police Department has launched initiatives designed to strengthen that relationship and enhance public safety. One such program is the Community Connect Program, a voluntary camera registry that encourages residents and business owners to partner with law enforcement by providing location information for private security cameras. This initiative enhances investigative efficiency, improves response times, and empowers community members to play an active role in crime prevention—while ensuring privacy and cooperation.

Chief Anderson also champions community engagement through events like National Night Out and school activities where officers interact with families, students, and local businesses outside of emergency situations. These efforts create opportunities for positive dialogue, mutual understanding, and collective problem-solving—key components of building safer, stronger neighborhoods.

In addition to his local leadership, Chief Anderson has been recognized by his peers across Louisiana. He has served as President of the Louisiana Association of Chiefs of Police, representing law enforcement leaders at conferences, legislative discussions, and professional development settings aimed at improving standards for police leadership and officer training statewide.

Chief Anderson’s leadership reflects a deep commitment to service rooted in faith-inspired values of justice, compassion, and unity. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Through his work with the Carencro Police Department, Chief Anderson brings that calling into everyday service, forging partnerships that protect lives, foster trust, and strengthen community bonds.
