King of Zydeco’ album honoring Clifton Chenier brings Grammy home to Acadiana

Louisiana’s Sound Rises with Thanksgiving and Praise

MAURICE, La. — Along the quiet banks of the Vermilion River, a small recording space continues to echo far beyond Acadiana. Dockside Studio in Maurice secured its 14th Grammy Award this week, once again placing Louisiana’s musical heritage on the global stage. The win came in the category of Best Regional Roots Music Album for “A Tribute to the King of Zydeco,” a project honoring the legacy of Clifton Chenier. Scripture reminds us, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (Psalm 150:6), and once again, Louisiana’s music has lifted that praise worldwide.

Honoring a Legacy That Still Speaks

Produced by Joel Savoy, Steve Berlin, and John Leopold for Eunice-based Valcour Records, the album celebrates what would have been Clifton Chenier’s 100th birthday. Savoy, founder of Valcour Records, called the moment a milestone as the label approaches its 20th anniversary. He credited the enduring influence of Chenier and the zydeco community that continues to work tirelessly to keep the music alive. “One generation commends your works to another” (Psalm 145:4), a truth embodied in this tribute that bridges past and present.

Music That Gives Back to the Next Generation

John Leopold emphasized that the project was not only about honoring history, but investing in the future. Proceeds from album sales support a scholarship in Clifton Chenier’s name at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Recorded largely at Dockside Studio, the album features remarkable collaborations, including performances by The Rolling Stones alongside Cajun artist Steve Riley, produced by Louisiana’s own CC Adcock. Voices such as Lucinda Williams, Charley Crockett, Taj Mahal, and contemporary zydeco leaders like Anthony Dopsie and CJ Chenier reflect a community united in purpose. Proverbs 22:6 teaches the value of investing in the next generation, and this effort does just that.

A State Rich in Talent and Testimony

Louisiana’s impact extended well beyond one award. Every nominee in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category hailed from the state, including Trombone Shorty, the Preservation Jazz Band, Corey Henry, and others rooted in New Orleans’ vibrant sound. Kenner native Jon Batiste earned his eighth Grammy for Best Americana Album, while PJ Morton brought home Best Gospel Album for “Heart of Mine.” These wins affirm that gifts given by God, when nurtured faithfully, can bless the world. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4).

Faithful Stewardship of a God-Given Gift

From blues legend Buddy Guy to jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner and vocalist Johnaye Kendrick, Louisiana artists continue to shine across genres. Their achievements are more than accolades; they are testimonies of perseverance, creativity, and faithful stewardship. Dockside Studio’s ongoing success stands as a reminder that God often uses humble places to produce extraordinary fruit. “Do not despise these small beginnings” (Zechariah 4:10).

A Prayer for the Community

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the rich musical heritage of Louisiana and for the artists, producers, and studios who steward these gifts with humility and excellence. Bless the communities impacted by this work, the students who will benefit from scholarships, and the generations yet to come. May this music continue to bring joy, unity, and hope, and may all glory be returned to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
