African American Heritage Foundation aims to preserve Black and Creole history in Acadiana

Faith, Heritage, and Hope: African American Heritage Foundation Preserves Legacy in Acadiana

LAFAYETTE, La. — In the heart of Acadiana, the African American Heritage Foundation is standing as a beacon of remembrance, unity, and faith—committed to preserving Black and Creole history for generations to come. Founded by Je’Nelle Chargois, the organization continues to flourish as a testament to what can happen when vision meets perseverance and when community work is rooted in purpose.

Scripture reminds us in Psalm 145:4, “One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.” That biblical calling echoes through the mission of the foundation, which seeks to ensure that the stories, struggles, and triumphs of African American and Creole families throughout Acadiana are neither forgotten nor diminished.

A Vision Born from Fellowship

What began as a simple act of kindness—taking seven senior citizens to lunch—has grown into a vibrant, 15-year organization hosting community-wide celebrations such as the Gala, the African American Heritage Foundation Parade, and Senior Appreciation Day.

Maisha Chargois, daughter of founder Je’Nelle Chargois, reflected on the humble beginnings that sparked a movement. “A long time ago, my mom started these events in the community. The first one was the senior citizen event,” she shared. From that small gathering, a larger mission unfolded—one centered on honoring elders, celebrating culture, and strengthening community bonds.

Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers “to consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together.” The foundation’s gatherings reflect that biblical model of fellowship—bringing people together not only to celebrate heritage but to cultivate unity and mutual encouragement.

Documenting the Journey for Future Generations

With Black History Month serving as a time of reflection and celebration, foundation leaders emphasize the importance of documentation. Maisha Chargois stressed the urgency of capturing today’s milestones so future generations can witness their evolution firsthand.

“It’s very important to document stuff,” she explained. “We have an opportunity with all the media to document history so our kids can look back and see how things have grown and changed.”

Proverbs 22:6 declares, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Preserving history is more than storytelling—it is discipleship through remembrance. By teaching children about the faith, resilience, and contributions of those who came before them, the foundation helps build identity grounded in truth and dignity.

Filling the Gaps in Education

Board member John James noted that one of the foundation’s core purposes is to ensure that Black history—often underrepresented in traditional classrooms—is taught and understood within the broader community.

Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” The foundation’s educational efforts seek to counter that loss by illuminating stories that deserve recognition. Through parades, cultural programs, and community outreach, the organization fosters awareness that strengthens both individual identity and collective understanding.

As the foundation continues its work, it serves as a reminder that preserving heritage is not simply about the past—it is about shaping a hopeful future.

A Prayer for the Community

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the vision and dedication of leaders who work to preserve history and honor those who came before us. Bless the African American Heritage Foundation and the families it serves. May their efforts bring unity, understanding, and healing throughout Acadiana. Strengthen the next generation with wisdom, courage, and faith. Let every story told glorify You and reflect Your truth that all people are created in Your image. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
