Lafayette Civic Cup Honors Decades of Service and Community Leadership

LAFAYETTE, La. — A Legacy of Leadership Recognized

The Lafayette Civic Cup Board of Directors has announced that Lafayette native Nick Pugh III will receive the prestigious 2026 Lafayette Civic Cup, one of the community’s highest honors. The award recognizes individuals whose leadership, vision, and dedication have made a lasting impact on Lafayette and its residents.

Now in its 94th year, the Lafayette Civic Cup remains the longest-standing civic award in Lafayette Parish. The honor is awarded to individuals whose contributions have strengthened the community through service, innovation, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

For many in Acadiana, Pugh’s selection reflects a lifetime devoted to helping people succeed through education, technology, philanthropy, and community involvement. His story serves as a reminder of the biblical principle found in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Building Opportunities Through Innovation

Born in Lafayette on New Year’s Day in 1945, Pugh graduated from Cathedral High School before earning a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His entrepreneurial journey began in 1970 when he established the first microwave telecommunications loop in the Gulf of Mexico.

Together with his wife, JoAnn, Pugh built successful telecommunications companies that eventually employed approximately 200 people across 11 time zones. Throughout his career, he sought innovative solutions to complex challenges while creating opportunities for others to thrive.

Pugh credits many local mentors and visionaries for helping shape his journey. In accepting the recognition, he expressed gratitude for those who encouraged and collaborated with him over the years and emphasized the importance of community involvement.

His approach reflects Proverbs 11:25, which teaches, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Transforming Education for Future Generations

One of Pugh’s most significant contributions has been his dedication to education. Through the Pugh Family Foundation, he and JoAnn have committed up to $9.1 million to support educational initiatives in Lafayette Parish. Their investment in the Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) model has benefited schools including J.W. Faulk Elementary, Dr. Raphael Baranco Elementary, and Alice Boucher Elementary.

The commitment is believed to be the largest private gift made to a Louisiana public school district in more than 170 years. The foundation also became the first supporter of UL Lafayette’s Learning Lab School and has played a major role in advancing STEM education throughout Acadiana.

Pugh has served as a volunteer leader of UL Lafayette’s Cajun Advanced Picosatellite Experiment (CAPE), helping establish the university as the first and only institution in Louisiana to build and launch satellites. He also founded the Nick Pugh Aerospace Electronics Research Lab and has mentored countless students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

These efforts embody the wisdom of Proverbs 22:6, which encourages communities to invest in the education and development of young people.

A Heart for Service Beyond the Classroom

Beyond education, Pugh’s commitment to service has touched many areas of community life. He has served as chair of Habitat for Humanity Lafayette, supported public education initiatives through Love Our Schools, and contributed to numerous organizations that strengthen Acadiana.

Community leaders say his impact can be seen in schools, nonprofits, civic organizations, and the lives of countless students and families. His leadership demonstrates the words of Matthew 5:16, where Jesus taught believers to let their light shine before others through good works.

As Lafayette prepares to honor Pugh at the 2026 Civic Cup celebration on November 10, residents are celebrating a man whose life has been marked by generosity, vision, and a commitment to serving others.

Prayer for the Community

Heavenly Father, we thank You for leaders who dedicate their lives to serving others and strengthening their communities. We pray for Nick Pugh III, his family, and all those whose lives have been impacted by his work. Bless the educators, students, volunteers, and organizations throughout Acadiana who continue to invest in future generations. Help us all to use our gifts and talents for the good of others and for Your glory. May Lafayette continue to grow in unity, compassion, and service. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
