LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. — In a heartfelt gathering rooted in gratitude and remembrance, local Vietnam veterans and their spouses were honored at the Lafayette VA Clinic during a special meal marking National Vietnam War Veterans Day. The event, hosted by Once Was Inc, served as the beginning of a weekend dedicated to recognizing the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of those who served. In a spirit of reverence, the community gathered to reflect on the words of John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
A MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE AND GRATITUDE
The meal provided more than nourishment—it created a sacred space for fellowship, healing, and honor. Veterans and their spouses shared stories, laughter, and quiet reflection, surrounded by a community determined to ensure they feel seen and appreciated. For many, the recognition was deeply meaningful, affirming their sacrifices were not forgotten. The gathering echoed Romans 12:10: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves,” reminding attendees that gratitude is both a command and a calling.
A MISSION ROOTED IN SERVICE AND LOVE
At the heart of the event were Michael Edmond and Racquel Edmond, whose leadership continues to impact veterans across the region. Their message was clear: honoring veterans is not an obligation, but a privilege. Through their work, they strive to bridge the gap between past sacrifice and present appreciation. Their mission reflects Hebrews 13:16: “Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” By serving those who once served, they embody Christ-like compassion and humility.
RESTORING DIGNITY AND HEALING HEARTS
Organizers emphasized that the weekend is about more than remembrance—it is about restoration. Many Vietnam veterans returned home to a nation divided, often without the welcome they deserved. Events like this aim to restore dignity and offer healing through acknowledgment and love. As Scripture reminds us in Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Through fellowship and recognition, the community seeks to mend wounds that have lingered for decades.
A COMMUNITY UNITED IN HONOR
Families, volunteers, and supporters stood side by side, demonstrating unity and gratitude for those who served. The presence of spouses highlighted the shared sacrifice carried by families, whose support remains vital to veterans’ well-being. The event reflected Ecclesiastes 4:9: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” Together, the community lifted up its heroes, reminding them they are not alone.
A LASTING LEGACY OF REMEMBRANCE
As the meal concluded, the impact of the gathering lingered in the hearts of all who attended. It was a powerful reminder that honoring the past strengthens the future. Through faith, fellowship, and gratitude, the Lafayette community reaffirmed its commitment to those who gave so much. The legacy of service lives on—not only in memory, but in action.
PRAYER FOR THE COMMUNITY
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the brave men and women who served our nation with courage and sacrifice. Bless the Vietnam veterans and their families, Lord, and surround them with Your peace and healing. Restore what has been broken, and remind them of their value and honor. Strengthen those who serve them today, and unite this community in love and gratitude. May Your presence bring comfort and hope to all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
