A New Beginning Behind Bars: Faith-Based Program Brings Hope to St. Mary Parish Inmates

A Chapel Opens the Door to Spiritual Renewal
ST. MARY PARISH, La. — In a powerful step toward restoration and redemption, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office is introducing a faith-based initiative designed to bring hope to inmates within the parish jail. At the heart of this effort is a newly established chapel, offering a sacred space where incarcerated individuals can reflect, pray, and reconnect with God. This initiative echoes the promise found in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” For many inmates, this chapel represents a fresh start and a chance to walk a new path.

Faith as a Foundation for Healing
Sergeant Princess Guienze describes the chapel as a “spiritual hospital,” a place where broken hearts and troubled souls can begin the process of healing. Inmates are invited to participate in Bible studies and structured eight-week programs aimed at guiding them toward better life choices. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 147:3, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Through faith-centered teaching, inmates are being encouraged to confront their past, seek forgiveness, and embrace transformation.

Programs That Build Character and Purpose
Deputy Asha Randall highlighted a variety of programs available to inmates, including “Thinking for a Change,” “Living in Balance,” and the faith-based course “Life Making Choices.” These initiatives are designed to address not only spiritual needs but also practical life skills such as parenting, financial responsibility, and decision-making. This holistic approach reflects Romans 12:2, which calls believers to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” By equipping inmates with both faith and knowledge, the program seeks to prepare them for a better future beyond incarceration.

Impact Felt Beyond the Inmates
The presence of the chapel is also making a difference for those who serve within the facility. Captain Samantha Poleder shared that the space provides a sense of peace and spiritual renewal even for deputies. In the midst of a demanding and often stressful environment, the chapel offers a moment of calm and reflection. As Matthew 11:28 reminds us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This shared experience of peace is strengthening both staff and inmates alike.

Reducing Recidivism Through Redemption
Major Warden Charles Parker emphasized that the ultimate goal of the program is to reduce repeat offenses and promote genuine rehabilitation. Inmates who complete the eight-week programs may earn good time credits, offering both spiritual and practical incentives for change. More importantly, the initiative seeks to transform “time served” into “time well spent.” This mission aligns with Ezekiel 36:26, where God وعدs, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.” True change begins from within, and this program aims to nurture that transformation.

A Community Effort Rooted in Faith
The chapel was made possible through generous donations from a church in Natchitoches, demonstrating the power of the body of Christ working together. This partnership reflects Hebrews 13:3, which encourages believers to “remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison.” By extending compassion and support, the church community is playing a vital role in bringing light into a place often marked by darkness.

A Prayer for Restoration and Hope
Heavenly Father, we lift up the inmates of St. Mary Parish and all those who serve within the jail. We pray that this chapel becomes a place of true transformation, where hearts are softened and lives are restored. Bring healing to the broken, guidance to the lost, and peace to those seeking You. Bless the leaders and volunteers who make this ministry possible, and let Your presence fill every corner of this space. May Your grace lead many to redemption and new life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
