LAFAYETTE, La. — What began as one man’s journey to regain control over his life has grown into a powerful ministry of movement, encouragement, and community. At Train Unique, founder Damon Vincent is helping individuals with physical and intellectual challenges discover strength, independence, and dignity through fitness. Rooted in perseverance and compassion, this gym reflects Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
From Diagnosis to Purpose: A Life Transformed
Vincent’s story began with a diagnosis of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia at just three years old. Managing the condition required strict routines, medications, and constant medical care. Though his body developed differently, Vincent often felt a lack of control—until he discovered athletics. Through sports, he found not only discipline but a sense of purpose. Like the promise in Jeremiah 29:11, his life reflects that God has plans “to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.”
Building More Than Muscle: Creating a Community
At Train Unique, Vincent and his team serve athletes of all abilities, designing personalized fitness plans tailored to each individual’s needs. Whether through one-on-one sessions or small group training, the goal is not simply physical improvement but emotional and social growth. Trainer Garret Cantu emphasizes that this is not a rehabilitation center—it is a place to grow stronger and build confidence. Ecclesiastes 4:9 reminds us, “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” This spirit of unity defines the gym’s mission.
Meeting People Where They Are
The gym welcomes individuals with a wide range of conditions, from autism and Down syndrome to spinal cord injuries. Every athlete is treated with dignity and respect, reflecting Psalm 139:14: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Vincent and his team regularly assess progress, ensuring that each person’s journey is both safe and meaningful. Their philosophy is simple yet profound—everyone is capable of growth, even if that growth looks different from others.
A Place of Hope in a Challenging World
For many athletes, Train Unique provides more than fitness—it offers belonging. In a world where accessibility remains a challenge, especially for wheelchair users, the gym becomes a refuge of encouragement and empowerment. Cantu notes that many health risks faced by individuals with disabilities stem not from their condition, but from limited access to active lifestyles. By offering a welcoming environment, the gym helps combat these challenges, aligning with 1 Corinthians 12:22, which teaches that “those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.”
Looking Ahead with Faith and Determination
Vincent’s vision continues to expand. What started as a small effort in Lafayette is now growing, with a second location recently opened in Baton Rouge and hopes for further outreach across Louisiana. His athletes are also reaching new heights, including a powerlifting team aiming to qualify for the Special Olympics in 2026. Through it all, Vincent encourages others to focus on personal growth rather than comparison, trusting that steady progress honors God.
Prayer for Strength and Encouragement
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the inspiring work being done through Train Unique and for the lives being transformed each day. We lift up every athlete, trainer, and family member, asking that You grant them strength, courage, and perseverance. Remind them that their worth is found in You and that they are beautifully made with purpose. Bless this community with continued growth, unity, and hope. May their efforts shine as a testimony of Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
