LAFAYETTE, La. — A new multimedia exhibition at the Hilliard Art Museum is encouraging visitors to slow down, listen, and rediscover the beauty of God’s creation through the sounds of South Louisiana’s treasured wetlands. Atchafalaya Remixed, curated by University of Louisiana at Lafayette ethnomusicologist Dr. Gwennie von Einsiedel, combines music, photography, and visual art to immerse audiences in the natural soundscape of the Atchafalaya Basin while inspiring thoughtful reflection on the relationship between humanity and creation.
The exhibition centers on a 24-hour field recording captured by Louisiana composer Earl Robicheaux in the Atchafalaya Basin. That recording was condensed into an hour-long soundscape and shared with several Louisiana musicians, including Keith Frank, The Babineaux Sisters, Danny Devillier, and Trey Boudreaux, who each created original musical works inspired by the rhythms and voices of the swamp. Their compositions accompany visual artwork throughout the exhibit, inviting visitors into a peaceful experience of contemplation.
Creation Declares the Glory of God
For Dr. von Einsiedel, listening extends beyond hearing sounds. She believes listening is a way of understanding both people and the world around us. Her vision for Atchafalaya Remixed encourages guests to pause long enough to notice what is often overlooked in everyday life.
That invitation echoes the words of Psalm 19:1, which proclaims, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” Every birdsong, rustling breeze, and flowing stream reflects the handiwork of the Creator. Christians recognize that nature itself points beyond its beauty to the One who spoke creation into existence.
Stewardship Through Wonder and Reflection
The exhibition also highlights the delicate balance between the natural environment and human influence. Through sound, photography, and experimental visual art, visitors are reminded that the Atchafalaya Basin is both a remarkable ecosystem and a landscape shaped by generations of people.
Scripture calls believers to care for God’s creation with wisdom and gratitude. Genesis 2:15 teaches that humanity was placed in the garden “to work it and take care of it.” Stewardship is not merely about protecting resources but honoring the Creator by valuing His creation and preserving it for future generations.
Photographer Olivia Luz Perillo’s dreamlike imagery of birds, waterways, flowers, and moonlit skies encourages viewers to slow their pace and appreciate the quiet moments often missed in daily life. Her work invites reflection and gratitude, reminding visitors that stillness can become an act of worship.
Finding Peace in God’s Presence
As the exhibition blends music, visual storytelling, and the natural sounds of Louisiana’s wetlands, it offers more than an artistic experience—it provides an opportunity to reconnect with God’s creation and the peace found in His presence.
