MONCUS PARK UNVEILS NEW SPACE OF PEACE AND REFLECTION IN LAFAYETTE PARISH

At Moncus Park in Lafayette Parish, community members gathered Saturday morning for the ribbon-cutting of the new Kergan Meditation Garden, a carefully designed space dedicated to rest, reflection, and reconnection with nature. Leaders, donors, and residents celebrated the opening as a meaningful addition to the park’s growing mission of serving as a place where families can slow down and enjoy creation. Organizers described the garden as a peaceful retreat from the pace of modern life, where visitors can step away from digital distractions and experience stillness in a natural setting.

A DONOR’S VISION FOR PEACE IN OVERWHELMING TIMES

The garden is named in honor of donor Ann Kergan, who shared her heartfelt inspiration during the ceremony. She reflected on the emotional and mental strain many people face today, noting how life can feel loud, stressful, and overwhelming. Kergan emphasized that the garden was created as a sanctuary where individuals can “get regrounded and centered,” offering a place to breathe and reset. Her vision aligns with the biblical encouragement found in Isaiah 26:3, which says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” The project stands as a testimony to generosity shaped by a desire to bless the broader community.

DESIGN ROOTED IN BALANCE BETWEEN PEOPLE AND CREATION

Landscape architect Michael Cullen explained that the garden’s design was influenced by Asian principles, including feng shui, which emphasizes harmony and balance between humanity and the natural world. The layout incorporates elements inspired by the bagua map, guiding the structure and flow of the space to promote calm and reflection. While culturally distinct in design philosophy, the garden’s intent resonates with the biblical truth of stewardship over creation, as seen in Genesis 2:15, where humanity is called to “tend and keep” the garden. The result is a thoughtfully arranged environment meant to encourage mindfulness and appreciation of God’s created order.

A BIBLICAL CALL TO REST IN A RESTLESS WORLD

From a Christian perspective, the opening of the Kergan Meditation Garden speaks to the deep human need for rest and renewal. Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28—“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”—echoes through spaces like this, where people are invited to pause and reflect. In a culture often driven by noise and urgency, the garden serves as a quiet reminder of Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Visitors are encouraged to use the space not only for relaxation, but also for spiritual reflection and gratitude for God’s creation.

A COMMUNITY GIFT OPEN DAILY FOR REFLECTION AND CONNECTION

The Kergan Meditation Garden is now open to the public during regular Moncus Park hours, from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Organizers hope it will become a cherished destination for individuals, families, and visitors seeking peace amid busy lives. Community leaders expressed gratitude for the collaboration that brought the project to life, highlighting its role in strengthening both mental well-being and community connection. As the garden welcomes its first visitors, it stands as a lasting symbol of restoration, offering a place where nature and reflection meet in the heart of Lafayette Parish.

PRAYER FOR THE COMMUNITY

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of peaceful places where Your creation can be enjoyed and hearts can be renewed. We lift up the community of Lafayette Parish and all who will enter this garden seeking rest. Lord, quiet anxious minds, heal weary hearts, and draw each visitor closer to Your presence. May this space become a refuge of peace, reflection, and gratitude, reminding all who enter that true rest is found in You alone. Bless the hands that made this project possible and let it bear lasting fruit for generations to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
