Vermilionville Celebrates Creole Heritage Through Award Honoring Legacy of Service

LAFAYETTE, La. — A renewed call to honor culture, faith, and community is echoing through Acadiana as Vermilionville Living History Museum opens nominations for the prestigious Richard J. Catalon Sr. Creole Heritage Award. The annual recognition highlights individuals who embody a deep commitment to preserving and promoting Creole culture—an effort that reflects the biblical call to remember and pass down heritage. Psalm 145:4 reminds us, “One generation shall commend your works to another,” a truth lived out through this meaningful tradition.

Honoring a Life That Inspired Generations

The award was established in 2004 to honor Richard J. Catalon Sr., one of Vermilionville’s first artisans whose passion for sharing Creole history left a lasting impact. After retirement, Catalon embraced what he called his “dream job,” educating visitors and students about Creole traditions, language, and life. Fluent in Creole French, he brought stories to life within the walls of the historic Mouton House and beyond. His dedication reflects Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go,” as he faithfully poured knowledge into younger generations.

Recognizing Cultural Ambassadors of Today

Today, Vermilionville continues that mission by seeking nominees who serve as ambassadors of Creole heritage. The award honors individuals who contribute through language preservation, culinary traditions, music, dance, education, and community leadership. Nominees are recognized not only for their talents but also for their character, serving as role models for future generations. Their work mirrors Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,” emphasizing that cultural stewardship can also be an act of faith.

A Celebration Rooted in Faith and Community

The recipient of the award will be announced during the Annual Creole Culture Day Celebration on June 7, 2026, an event that brings together families, educators, and cultural leaders in a joyful expression of unity. Established in 2003 in memory of Catalon, the celebration continues to highlight the richness of Creole identity while strengthening community bonds. In a region known for its cultural “gumbo,” this gathering reflects 1 Corinthians 12:12, which teaches that many parts come together to form one body—each contributing something valuable and unique.

Preserving Heritage for Future Generations

As the nomination deadline of May 19 approaches, Vermilionville encourages community members to recognize those who are actively preserving and advancing Creole culture. Through storytelling, education, and lived example, these individuals ensure that traditions are not lost but strengthened. Their efforts stand as a testimony to God’s faithfulness across generations, echoing Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These commandments… impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road.”

A Living Testimony of Faith and Culture

In Acadiana, heritage is more than history—it is a living testimony of resilience, faith, and unity. The Richard J. Catalon Sr. Creole Heritage Award serves as a reminder that honoring the past can inspire a stronger future. Through faithful stewardship of culture, communities continue to reflect God’s design for connection, identity, and purpose.

A Prayer for Heritage and Community

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the rich heritage of the Creole community and for those who dedicate their lives to preserving it. Bless the individuals who serve as cultural ambassadors, guiding future generations with wisdom, love, and faith. Strengthen communities as they come together to celebrate their shared history. May these efforts continue to honor You and reflect Your truth across generations. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
