CAST NEWS — A new chapter of inclusion and compassion is unfolding in Lafayette Parish as Carencro Catholic School unveiled a new faith-based educational program designed specifically to support students with exceptionalities.
The newly established St. Joseph of Cupertino Program was officially introduced Wednesday and aims to provide children with disabilities an opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive within a Catholic school environment rooted in faith and encouragement.
School leaders say the program was made possible in part through the generosity of local veterinarian Dr. Kenny Arceneaux, whose contribution helped launch the initiative. The program carries special personal meaning for Arceneaux because his nephew is among the students enrolled in the classroom.
Administrators say the program is beginning with one classroom but hope it will continue expanding in the future as resources and support become available.
Creating Opportunities for Every Child
Principal Dr. Sonya Louviere said the new program addresses a need many Catholic families have faced for years due to limited educational options for children with disabilities in faith-based schools.
“You know we’re very small right now, we just have one class,” Louviere said. “There are not many opportunities out there in Catholic schools to bring in children with disabilities because of the resources.”
Faith leaders across Acadiana say the program reflects the biblical belief that every child is created with value, purpose, and dignity. Psalm 139:14 declares, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Louviere emphasized that while students may learn at different rates or require different approaches, every child deserves access to education, encouragement, and the opportunity to succeed.
“Every child can learn,” she said. “They may not be able to learn at the same rate and the same pace and at the same level, but every child can learn, and every child deserves that opportunity.”
Parents and educators attending the unveiling described the program as both emotional and hopeful, especially for families who have long searched for educational environments that combine academic support with Christian values.
A Faith-Based Environment of Love and Inclusion
The St. Joseph of Cupertino Program is named after the Catholic saint known as the patron saint of students and learning. School leaders say the name reflects the mission of creating a compassionate environment where students are encouraged spiritually, emotionally, and academically.
Teachers and staff involved in the program hope to build classrooms where children feel seen, accepted, and supported in their individual learning journeys.
1 Corinthians 12:22 reminds believers, “Those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.” Community supporters say the new program reflects Christ’s call to embrace and uplift every member of the community, especially those who may otherwise feel overlooked.
Families say faith-based education can offer children not only academic instruction but also emotional security, spiritual encouragement, and a strong sense of belonging.
Community Support Fuels Hope for the Future
School officials acknowledged that staffing and funding challenges remain significant obstacles for expanding programs serving students with disabilities. However, supporters believe the launch of the St. Joseph of Cupertino Program is an important first step toward creating more inclusive educational opportunities throughout Acadiana.
Local churches, donors, and community leaders are being encouraged to continue supporting efforts that make specialized education more accessible for families seeking Christian-centered learning environments.
Galatians 6:2 teaches believers to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Many see the new program as a living example of that Scripture through compassion, generosity, and community partnership.
As the first students begin their educational journey in the classroom, families say they are grateful for a place where children with exceptionalities are not only welcomed, but celebrated.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, thank You for the students, teachers, parents, and supporters who are helping create opportunities for children with exceptionalities to learn and grow in faith. Bless the St. Joseph of Cupertino Program and all who dedicate their time, resources, and love to serving children with unique needs. Strengthen families seeking support and remind every child that they are deeply loved and wonderfully made in Your image. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
