A Renewed Vision for Sam Houston Jones State Park
LAKE CHARLES, La. — A remarkable partnership between Louisiana leaders, private industry, and environmental experts is bringing new hope to one of the state’s treasured outdoor destinations. Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser joined Woodside Energy and local officials to announce a historic $5 million investment that will restore more than 800 acres of native habitat at Sam Houston Jones State Park, which suffered devastating damage during Hurricanes Laura and Delta.
The restoration effort represents the largest corporate investment ever made to a Louisiana state park and reflects a shared commitment to preserving God’s creation for future generations. The project will include planting approximately 245,000 trees and restoring five major ecosystems that provide homes for wildlife and recreation for countless visitors.
The Bible reminds believers in Genesis 2:15 that God placed mankind in the Garden of Eden “to work it and take care of it.” This restoration effort reflects that biblical responsibility to faithfully steward the earth entrusted to us.
A Community Working Together
Standing in the park, Lt. Gov. Nungesser reflected on the destruction left behind after the hurricanes and the remarkable transformation now underway.
“I was here after the hurricane with no trees,” he said. “To see this project over the next several years that is going to bring this park back to life and restore its beauty is something incredible.”
The public-private partnership brings together the Louisiana Office of State Parks, Woodside Energy, and ecological restoration firm RES, which designed and will oversee the six-year restoration initiative. Construction will continue through 2027, followed by large-scale planting from 2026 through 2028, while monitoring and research will continue into 2031.
Their collaboration demonstrates the truth found in Ecclesiastes 4:9, which teaches, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” By combining resources and expertise, these organizations are working toward a lasting impact that no single group could accomplish alone.
Investing in the Next Generation
The project will also create valuable educational opportunities for students at McNeese State University. Interim President Kedrick Nicholas announced plans for graduate-level research programs that will allow students to study wildlife habitats and participate in hands-on conservation efforts throughout the restoration process.
The initiative will provide active learning experiences while helping scientists better understand the park’s recovering ecosystems.
This investment in education echoes Proverbs 1:5, which encourages believers to continually grow in wisdom and understanding. By preparing future conservation leaders, the project extends its impact beyond today’s restoration and into generations yet to come.
