Louisiana Sisters Use the Arts to Celebrate Faith, Culture, and Community

Two Lafayette sisters are demonstrating how creativity can preserve culture, strengthen communities, and inspire meaningful conversations. Chasah and Charliese West, known professionally as the West Sisters, are preparing to present “Swell: In Concert,” an original musical that highlights the beauty of South Louisiana while addressing the challenges of coastal erosion, family, and hope. Their work reflects a growing desire among Christian artists to use God-given talents to encourage others and shine a light on issues affecting local communities. As Colossians 3:23 reminds believers, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

Stories That Preserve God’s Gifts

The sisters say their passion for storytelling grew from their love for Acadiana’s unique heritage. Although they spent parts of their childhood overseas, Lafayette became the place where their creativity flourished. Previous projects explored the importance of preserving the Louisiana Creole language and honoring family traditions that might otherwise be forgotten. Scripture teaches the importance of passing down a godly heritage, declaring in Psalm 78:4, “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.” Through film, music, and theater, the West Sisters hope to inspire families to value the stories that shape their communities and identity.

A Musical Rooted in Hope and Stewardship

Their newest production tells the story of a fictional Louisiana coastal town facing rising waters, difficult choices, and the strength found in community. While the musical explores the realities of coastal erosion and extreme weather, it also celebrates compassion, perseverance, and neighbors caring for one another during uncertain times. Genesis 2:15 reminds believers that humanity is called to care for God’s creation, making stewardship of the environment both a practical and spiritual responsibility. The sisters believe storytelling can encourage thoughtful conversations while offering hope instead of despair.

Serving the Community Through Creative Excellence

Rather than producing a fully staged musical, “Swell: In Concert” offers audiences an opportunity to experience the creative process through live narration, music, and performances by talented Acadiana vocalists. Many of the artists involved come from diverse backgrounds, including local theaters, churches, and nonprofit organizations. The collaboration reflects the biblical picture found in 1 Corinthians 12:12, where many individual gifts come together to serve one purpose. The West Sisters expressed gratitude for the support of the Acadiana community, saying its spirit of encouragement and collaboration has allowed their vision to grow and flourish.
