LAFAYETTE, La. — A new chapter is beginning at Lafayette High School as students, parents, educators, school leaders, and community officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the substantial completion of the school’s long-awaited campus construction. As Lafayette Parish students begin the 2026-2027 school year, the new facility represents more than a modern building—it represents opportunity, growth, and hope for generations of students.
A New Beginning for Lafayette Students
The ceremony brought together Lafayette Parish School System board members, current and former faculty, local officials, and members of the construction and design teams. While work continues on the football field and plans are underway for a new baseball complex at the former S.J. Montgomery Elementary School site, the majority of the Lafayette High campus is now complete.
Approximately 2,200 students are expected to walk through the school’s halls this year. Superintendent Francis Touchet described the moment as a significant milestone for the school and the community.
Scripture reminds us in Isaiah 43:19, “See, I am doing a new thing!” The completion of the campus provides a fitting picture of new beginnings and the possibilities that come when a community invests in its children.
A Campus Designed for Learning
The previous Lafayette High School building on West Congress Street served the community for nearly 75 years before it was demolished in spring 2025. The new campus, which opened to students and teachers last year, has continued taking shape as construction progressed.
The completed school can accommodate approximately 500 more students than the former campus and includes 52 classrooms and laboratories. Students also have access to a larger library, woodworking and welding shops, a new gymnasium, and a state-of-the-art concert hall for the school’s performing arts academy.
These resources provide students with opportunities to discover their gifts and develop skills for the future. Proverbs 18:16 teaches that “a man’s gift makes room for him,” reminding us that every young person has God-given abilities that can be cultivated and used for good.
A Place Students Can Call Home
For Lafayette High students, the new campus is already becoming more than a place to attend classes. Incoming junior Monroe Roof highlighted the courtyard, outdoor lunch areas, and library as some of her favorite spaces.
Biology teacher Kristy Hebert said she has also witnessed a change in students’ attitudes toward their surroundings. Students are taking greater ownership of the building, cleaning up after themselves, returning items to their proper places, and treating the school with increased pride.
That sense of stewardship echoes 1 Corinthians 14:40, which teaches that things should be done “decently and in order.” Taking responsibility for a shared space can also teach young people valuable lessons about respect, accountability, and caring for what has been entrusted to them.
Looking Toward the Future
Lafayette High’s ribbon-cutting represents one milestone in a larger period of construction and growth throughout Lafayette Parish. Additional projects are planned at L.J. Alleman Middle, Acadiana High, and Broadmoor Elementary, along with plans for a new pre-K through eighth-grade campus in north Lafayette.
School board member Roddy Bergeron described the Lafayette High celebration as a turning point for the parish, with more opportunities still ahead.
As the community looks toward these future projects, Jeremiah 29:11 offers a message of hope: God has plans for His people, plans that include hope and a future. The buildings may be new, but the greatest investment remains the students who will fill them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the students, teachers, families, administrators, and community members who make Lafayette Parish schools a place of learning and growth. We pray for Lafayette High School as thousands of students begin a new school year. Give teachers wisdom, administrators discernment, and students courage to learn, grow, and pursue their God-given gifts. Protect every child who enters these halls and surround them with mentors who encourage them toward excellence and integrity. We also pray for the construction workers, educators, and leaders involved in future school projects throughout Lafayette Parish. May these new facilities become places where young people discover their purpose, develop their talents, and prepare to make a positive difference in the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
