LAFAYETTE, La. — It is possible to remain active in church, faithfully attend worship services, and continue serving others while quietly drifting away from the deep love we once had for Jesus Christ. In Revelation 2, Jesus lovingly warned the church in Ephesus that although they had remained faithful in many areas, they had “forsaken the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4).
This “first love” is much like the excitement and devotion experienced at the beginning of a marriage. The prophet Jeremiah recorded God’s words to Israel: “I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me” (Jeremiah 2:2). God was reminding His people of the close relationship they once shared with Him before routine and distraction took their place.
Faith Is More Than Routine
Just as healthy marriages require continual love, attention, and commitment, so does a believer’s relationship with Christ. Over time, Christians can become comfortable with religious routines while losing the joy and passion that first drew them to the Savior.
Jesus does not ask His followers to live on emotion alone, but He does desire hearts that remain devoted to Him. Prayer, worship, Bible study, and serving others should flow from a genuine love for God—not merely from habit or obligation. As Jesus said in Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
A Heart Renewed by Grace
The good news is that God always welcomes those who return to Him with sincere hearts. His love never changes, and His grace invites believers to renew their commitment each day. When we remember His goodness and spend time in His presence, our love for Him grows stronger.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us with an everlasting love. Forgive us for the times we have allowed routine, distractions, or complacency to replace our passion for You. Renew our hearts and restore the joy of our salvation. Help us love You with our whole hearts and faithfully reflect Your love to those around us. May our churches and communities remain firmly rooted in a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. In His holy name, Amen.
