When Small-Town Doubts Became a Prophetic Lesson
ABBEVILLE, La. — Years ago, an elementary school teacher offered a sobering observation about Koryn Hawthorne’s chances of winning NBC’s “The Voice”: Abbeville might simply be too small to give her enough votes to become the champion.
The concern seemed reasonable. Hawthorne was competing on a national stage against singers from larger cities with substantial audiences and powerful social-media followings. Yet what appeared to be a disadvantage became part of a much greater story—one that reminds Christians that human limitations do not determine God’s plans.
The Bible declares in 1 Samuel 16:7 that people look at outward appearances, while the Lord looks at the heart. Hawthorne’s story illustrates how a person’s beginnings do not have to define the destination God has prepared.
A Hometown Stood Behind Its Daughter
During Season 8 of “The Voice,” Hawthorne’s powerful R&B voice captivated audiences and carried her into the final four. Back home, family members, friends, church members and supporters throughout Vermilion Parish worked to rally votes for their hometown singer.
Abbeville celebrated Hawthorne with a parade and an official proclamation declaring May 6, 2015, Koryn Hawthorne Day. The community’s enthusiasm demonstrated something larger than a television competition: people believed in one of their own.
Although Hawthorne ultimately finished fourth, her journey was far from over.
What Looked Like Defeat Became a Door
The fourth-place finish could have been remembered as a disappointment. Instead, it became another chapter in a story of perseverance.
Hawthorne went on to embrace contemporary Christian and gospel music, releasing her 2017 debut single, “Won’t He Do It.” The song became a major gospel success, earning a gold record and reaching No. 1 on three Billboard gospel charts. It remained at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart for 41 weeks, establishing a record for the longest reign at the top for a female artist.
Her journey echoes Romans 8:28, which teaches that God works through circumstances for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
A Voice That Reached Beyond Louisiana
What began in a small south Louisiana community eventually reached millions of listeners. “Won’t He Do It” accumulated more than 100 million YouTube views and more than 60 million streams across digital music platforms.
Hawthorne’s career has also included two Grammy nominations and multiple music and image awards. Her influence demonstrates that a message born in a small community can travel far beyond its original boundaries.
Isaiah 54:2 speaks of enlarging one’s tent and stretching out the curtains. For Hawthorne, the territory of her music has continued to expand.
A New Chapter With Motown Gospel
In July, Hawthorne added another significant milestone by signing a recording contract with Motown Gospel, the historic label associated with legendary musical figures including Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.
Her first project with the label is being produced by J. White Did It, whose previous work includes Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits. The upcoming EP is scheduled for release October 2, while its first single, “His Favorite,” has already begun attracting attention online.
Motown Gospel describes Hawthorne’s artistry as a bridge connecting gospel, R&B and contemporary music.
The Voice That Was Never Too Small
Executive Vice President Walter Thomas praised Hawthorne’s ability to connect with listeners through music that is both personal and uplifting.
For Christians, that ability to encourage others is significant. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us of the power of words, while Matthew 5:16 calls believers to let their light shine before others.
Koryn Hawthorne may have been considered too small to win “The Voice,” but her story suggests that the size of a hometown does not determine the reach of a God-given gift.
The voice that once rose from Abbeville is now being heard around the world—and her journey is a reminder that what looks like a closed door may simply be the beginning of another calling.
A Prayer for Koryn Hawthorne and Her Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gifts and talents You place within Your children. We thank You for Koryn Hawthorne, her family, her hometown of Abbeville, and all those who encouraged her along the way. Continue to guide her music, her career and her testimony. Give her wisdom as her influence grows, and help her use her voice to encourage, uplift and point people toward hope. Bless the people of Abbeville and Vermilion Parish. Remind every young person who feels overlooked or underestimated that their worth is not determined by the opinions of others. Help them trust Your timing and purpose. As Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, You know the plans You have for Your people—plans filled with hope and a future. May Koryn’s story encourage others to keep believing, keep serving and keep using their gifts for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
