Ragin’ Cajuns Invite Lafayette Community to Honor Teachers Who Go the Extra Yard

Celebrating Those Who Serve
LAFAYETTE, La. — Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Football is giving the Acadiana community an opportunity to celebrate educators whose dedication reaches beyond the classroom through the national “Extra Yard for Teachers” initiative.

Fans are being encouraged to nominate teachers who have made a meaningful difference in the lives of their students and communities. Four educators will ultimately be recognized on the field during Louisiana’s home football game against UAB on September 19.

For a Christian community, honoring teachers reflects a biblical principle of recognizing those who faithfully serve others. Proverbs 22:6 calls attention to the importance of guiding children, while Galatians 6:9 reminds believers not to become weary in doing good.

A Gift of Appreciation
The selected teachers will have the opportunity to receive a portion of $8,500 provided through the College Football Playoff Foundation. Nominations must be submitted by September 1 and should include the teacher’s name and a brief explanation of why the educator deserves recognition.

The initiative provides more than public recognition. It points attention toward the daily work of educators who invest time, patience and compassion into young people. Teachers often influence students in ways that extend far beyond academic lessons, becoming sources of encouragement and stability during important seasons of life.

Faith and the Calling to Teach
Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the responsibility of passing wisdom from one generation to another. Psalm 78:4 speaks of telling the coming generation about the “praiseworthy acts of the LORD,” while Proverbs 1:5 highlights the value of growing in knowledge and understanding.

Teachers play an important role in that generational work. Although education takes place in secular classrooms, Christian faith recognizes teaching as an opportunity to influence lives through patience, integrity, service and truth.

Jesus also demonstrated the importance of investing in others, particularly the next generation. In Matthew 19:14, He welcomed children and emphasized their value in God’s kingdom.

A National Investment in Education
Extra Yard for Teachers Week was launched in 2015 as a nationwide celebration led by the CFP Foundation. The initiative uses the visibility of college football to recognize educators and elevate the teaching profession.

Each of the Sun Belt Conference’s 14 institutions will receive a CFP Foundation grant supporting four areas: recognition, resources, professional development and recruitment.

The broader initiative has invested more than $104 million in education, affecting approximately 96,000 schools, 756,000 teachers and more than 14 million students nationwide.

Those numbers represent more than financial investment. They represent millions of opportunities for students to learn, grow and prepare for the future.

Four Teachers to Be Honored in Lafayette
Louisiana’s recognition ceremony will take place during the September 19 home game against UAB. The celebration will give fans a chance to publicly thank four educators whose work has made a difference.

The effort also reminds the wider community that supporting children requires more than one institution. Families, schools, churches, universities, businesses and community organizations all have opportunities to encourage the next generation.

Philippians 2:4 encourages believers to look not only to their own interests but also to the interests of others. Recognizing teachers is one practical way to live out that principle.

Football Season Brings Another Community Opportunity
As Louisiana prepares to recognize educators, Ragin’ Cajuns football is also preparing for the 2026 season. Season tickets are on sale for the six-game home schedule at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.

The schedule includes non-conference games against Lamar and UAB, along with Sun Belt matchups against Arkansas State, Troy, South Alabama and Coastal Carolina.

For fans, the upcoming season offers more than competition. It provides opportunities to gather as a community, celebrate local accomplishments and recognize people whose service often happens away from the spotlight.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the teachers who faithfully serve our children and communities. Give educators strength when they are weary, wisdom when challenges arise and patience as they guide students. Bless every student with a desire to learn and surround them with people who encourage them. Help our families, schools, churches and communities work together for the good of the next generation. May we remember the call of 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to encourage and build one another up. Bless the teachers being recognized and all those whose faithful service may never receive public applause.
