LAFAYETTE, La. — Four Louisiana law enforcement agencies were recognized for their commitment to innovative community service during the annual Leaders in Law Enforcement Awards held Tuesday at the City Club in Lafayette. Among those receiving statewide recognition were the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Carencro Police Department, both honored for programs that are transforming lives through compassion, education, and prevention rather than punishment alone.
The awards celebrated agencies that are building stronger communities by addressing the root causes of crime and investing in people before problems become tragedies. Each honored department also received a $40,000 grant to strengthen and expand its community-centered initiatives.
A Ministry of Restoration Through the SAVE Program
The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office earned recognition for its SAVE Program, an initiative designed to help individuals struggling with addiction find recovery instead of repeatedly entering the criminal justice system. Sheriff Becket Breaux emphasized that the program’s purpose is not simply enforcing the law but offering people a pathway toward healing and a better future.
“We don’t want to see you in jail,” Breaux shared. “It’s keeping them away from jail and giving them a better life.”
His words reflect the heart of Galatians 6:2, which teaches believers to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Addiction often affects entire families and communities, and programs like SAVE demonstrate how mercy, accountability, and practical support can work together to restore lives.
By offering hope instead of hopelessness, the Sheriff’s Office is modeling the biblical principle found in Isaiah 61:1, where God calls His people to proclaim freedom for the captives and bring healing to the brokenhearted.
Building Character in the Next Generation
The Carencro Police Department was honored for its outstanding work with local schools through programs including Badges of Trust, Stop the Bullying, and the Explorer Program. These initiatives encourage positive relationships between students and law enforcement while teaching respect, leadership, and responsibility.
Police Chief David Anderson praised the dedication of the department’s school resource officers, noting the remarkable progress they have witnessed in local schools. Through consistent mentoring and engagement, officers are helping young people develop confidence, make wise decisions, and understand the importance of treating others with kindness.
The mission echoes Proverbs 22:6, which reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Investing in children today helps build safer, healthier communities for generations to come.
Serving with Justice, Mercy, and Compassion
The recognition of these Acadiana agencies serves as a reminder that law enforcement can play a vital role in restoring hope while protecting communities. The additional grant funding will allow these programs to continue expanding their impact throughout Acadiana. Their work reflects the instruction of Micah 6:8, which calls God’s people to “act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
