Welding Program at Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Offers New Hope and New Beginnings for Graduates

Celebrating Achievement and Second Chances

A spirit of hope, perseverance, and transformation filled the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Complex this week as six graduates were honored for completing the Technical Welding Program offered through a partnership between the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO) and South Louisiana Community College (SoLAcc).

During a special ceremony, Steve Johnson, Demarcus Jones, Cody Lambert, Joshua Menard, Harold Ozenne, and Leroy Walker received recognition for earning technical diplomas in Welding. Their accomplishments mark an important milestone that could open doors to meaningful employment and long-term career opportunities upon their release.

For many in attendance, the event served as a powerful reminder that a person’s past does not have to define their future. Scripture echoes this truth in 2 Corinthians 5:17, which states, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” The graduates’ dedication to learning reflects the possibility of renewal and the hope that comes through personal growth and determination.

College officials noted that the welding program is about much more than learning a trade. It is about equipping students with confidence, discipline, and the tools necessary to build productive lives after incarceration. Graduates also have the opportunity to continue their education through SoLAcc and pursue an associate degree, further expanding their career prospects.

Proverbs 22:29 teaches, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will stand before kings; they will not stand before obscure people.” By developing professional skills, these graduates are positioning themselves to contribute positively to their families, workplaces, and communities.

A Partnership Transforming Lives

Since its launch in 2017, the partnership between LPSO and SoLAcc has provided incarcerated students with access to accredited workforce education while addressing the growing demand for skilled labor throughout the region.

The program reached a significant milestone in 2025 with the opening of a permanent 10-bay Welding Training Facility at the LPSO Public Safety Complex. Funded by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, the facility greatly expanded training opportunities and replaced the mobile welding unit that had previously been used.

Sheriff Mark Garber praised the program’s continued success and its impact on participants who commit themselves to learning and personal development. Local leaders say the program has consistently demonstrated that education can play a vital role in reducing barriers and creating pathways toward successful reentry into society.
