A Heart for Her Community
In Lafayette, Louisiana, Eboni Phidd is becoming a powerful example of how personal tragedy can inspire a life dedicated to helping others. After losing her sister, Brittany Shante’ McIver, to suicide during the pandemic, Eboni was confronted with the devastating realities surrounding mental health and the lack of accessible support, particularly in underserved communities.
Instead of allowing grief to define her story, Eboni chose to turn her pain into purpose. Through her work and involvement in the community, she has made it her mission to remind people that they are not alone and that asking for help should never be a source of shame.
Walking Alongside Others
Those who encounter Eboni’s work see more than an advocate for mental health—they see someone willing to walk alongside people during some of their most difficult moments. Her approach is rooted in compassion, listening, education, and connection.
Whether she is speaking with young people, participating in community events, connecting families with resources, or encouraging someone who may be struggling, Eboni works to create an environment where people feel valued. Her efforts reflect the words of Romans 12:15: “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.”
That willingness to meet people where they are has become an important part of her presence in the Lafayette community.
Investing in the Next Generation
Eboni has placed particular attention on young people, recognizing that early conversations about mental health can help build awareness and resilience. Through youth outreach, school workshops, and mental health first aid education, she encourages students to recognize warning signs, ask questions, and understand the importance of supporting one another.
Her goal is not simply to provide information, but to help young people understand that their voices matter. By creating safe opportunities for conversation, she encourages students to look beyond stigma and recognize when they or someone they know may need support.
Proverbs 31:8 says, “Open thy mouth for the dumb,” reminding believers of the responsibility to speak up for those who may have difficulty speaking for themselves.
Turning Grief Into Service
Eboni’s story is ultimately one of service. The loss of Brittany changed her, but it also gave her a deeper understanding of the importance of compassion and community. Through A Walk With Britt, she honors her sister’s memory while reaching out to others who may be experiencing pain, loneliness, or uncertainty.
Her community involvement includes wellness events, educational opportunities, resource connections, volunteer engagement, and partnerships with others who share a desire to strengthen Lafayette. These efforts demonstrate that meaningful change often begins when one person decides to care enough to take action.
Galatians 6:9 encourages believers not to become weary in doing good. Eboni’s continued commitment is an example of that perseverance.
A Person Who Chooses to Show Up
Community strength is not always measured by large accomplishments. Sometimes it is found in the person who continues showing up, listening, encouraging, educating, and extending a hand to someone who needs it.
For Eboni Phidd, honoring Brittany means making sure her life and memory continue to inspire something positive. Her story reminds Lafayette that compassion can become a form of service and that one person’s willingness to care can encourage an entire community to care more deeply.
A Walk With Britt may carry Brittany’s name, but the heart behind the work is Eboni’s commitment to people. Through her example, she is helping create a community where conversations about mental health are met with understanding rather than judgment and where people are encouraged to seek support rather than suffer silently.
A Community Called to Care
Eboni’s journey reflects an important truth: strong communities are built by people who are willing to stand with one another. Her efforts demonstrate that even after profound loss, a person can choose hope, compassion, and service.
As Lafayette continues to address the challenges surrounding mental health, Eboni’s presence offers a reminder that community change begins with individuals who are willing to care. Her work honors Brittany while extending hope to countless others.
