A Lifetime Dedicated to Remembering the Past

At 83 years old, JD Soileau of Ville Platte has devoted decades to preserving the stories, artifacts, and way of life that shaped South Louisiana.

What began as a childhood interest has become a ministry of remembrance and education. Soileau’s passion for collecting antiques and historical items has transformed his family property into a living museum where young people can experience Cajun history firsthand.

His efforts reflect the biblical principle found in Psalm 78:4: “We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.” Through his collection, Soileau is helping ensure that the stories and traditions of the past are passed on to those who will carry them into the future.

A Passion Sparked by Family Tradition

Soileau’s love for preservation began when he accompanied his father to local auctions as a young boy. Watching treasured items change hands sparked a lifelong interest in collecting.

Over the years, his collection grew from a few antiques into an impressive display of Cajun history. Among his most cherished acquisitions is an old Cajun home that once stood in nearby Chataignier. More than three decades ago, Soileau carefully had the structure moved to his property, where it became the centerpiece of his historical collection.

The home now houses countless artifacts and memories from generations past, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of Louisiana’s Cajun families.

Teaching Beyond the Classroom

Before becoming a full-time farmer, Soileau worked as a school teacher. Although his career eventually led him away from the classroom, his heart for teaching never disappeared.

Today, he continues educating young people by opening his historical home to school groups and visitors. Unlike many museums where touching exhibits is prohibited, Soileau encourages students to interact with the artifacts, creating a hands-on learning experience that brings history to life.
