Celebrating Those Who Quietly Make a Difference
LAFAYETTE, La. — Four dedicated community leaders who have spent years serving Acadiana will be recognized as 2026 Wavemaker honorees during the sixth annual Undercurrent Awards. Hosted by Lafayette-native and CBS News correspondent David Begnaud, the event will take place on October 4 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in downtown Lafayette.
Presented by The Current, a nonprofit news organization, the annual awards honor individuals whose contributions often happen away from the spotlight but whose impact is deeply felt throughout the community. This year’s honorees are Blake Miller, Desiree Hebert, Joyce Gaymon, and Melissa Bowen, each representing a unique area of service that has strengthened the lives of countless people across Acadiana.
Their stories serve as a reminder of Galatians 6:9, which encourages believers, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Through faithful service and dedication, these individuals have become examples of what it means to love and serve others.
Using Gifts to Strengthen the Community
Among the honorees is Blake Miller, a musician and educator devoted to preserving and passing down Cajun music to future generations. By teaching young people and celebrating Acadiana’s rich cultural heritage, Miller is helping ensure that the traditions that define the region remain alive for years to come.
Desiree Hebert has spent nearly twenty years working in juvenile justice, helping connect children and families with vital resources and support systems. Her commitment to helping young people navigate difficult circumstances reflects the biblical call found in Proverbs 22:6 to “train up a child in the way he should go.”
Joyce Gaymon, a military veteran and longtime public servant, has dedicated herself to creating opportunities for families. Her affordable summer program on Lafayette’s Northside has provided children with a safe and enriching environment while supporting working parents throughout the community.
Melissa Bowen, a mental health therapist, speaker, trainer, and theatre director, has focused her efforts on helping people build meaningful connections and find a sense of belonging. Her work reminds many that healing often begins when individuals know they are valued and loved.
Recognizing Servants Rather Than Seeking Recognition
David Begnaud, who has gained national recognition through his reporting while maintaining strong ties to Lafayette, expressed his excitement about celebrating the honorees.
“These are the kinds of people I love coming home to celebrate,” Begnaud shared. “They are doing meaningful work without seeking recognition for themselves.”
His words echo the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” The Wavemakers exemplify this principle by serving others with humility and dedication.
Christiaan Mader, editor-in-chief of The Current, noted that each honoree saw a need in the community and chose to take action rather than stand by. Their willingness to serve demonstrates how one person’s efforts can create lasting change.

As Acadiana prepares to celebrate these four Wavemakers, their stories highlight the power of compassion, leadership, and faith-inspired action. Whether through education, youth advocacy, family support, cultural preservation, or mental health outreach, each honoree has contributed to making Lafayette a stronger and more connected community.
