OPELOUSAS, La. — A vibrant new mural greeting visitors at the Opelousas and Interstate 49 exit is doing more than adding color to the city’s landscape. The artwork stands as a tribute to championship-winning high school athletic teams while celebrating the dedication, perseverance, and community spirit that helped make their success possible.
Created by local artist Jerome Ford with assistance from former art students from St. Landry Parish, the mural reflects a shared effort that mirrors the teamwork found both on the playing field and in the classroom. The project has quickly become a source of pride for residents, honoring athletes who achieved excellence while also highlighting the importance of investing in the next generation.
For many in the community, the mural serves as a visual reminder that hard work, determination, and encouragement can leave a lasting impact. Galatians 6:9 reminds believers, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” The achievements celebrated in the mural reflect that spirit of perseverance.

The mentorship aspect of the project reflects Proverbs 22:6, which teaches, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” By sharing his skills and experience, Ford is helping young artists discover their potential while strengthening the artistic culture of the community.
