Guarding Your Mind: The Battle for Your Thoughts

“By the word of Your lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer.” (Psalm 17:4)

When Satan sought to lead the first man and woman into sin, he began by targeting their minds. This tactic remains effective to this day.

Paul warned of this danger, saying, “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3). The enemy assaults our minds because they are our command center. Through our thoughts and imagination, we can access memories of the past and envision the future.

The Devil understands that if he can influence our thoughts, he is halfway to achieving his goal. The Bible reminds us, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

It is often said, “Sow a thought; reap an act. Sow an act; reap a character. Sow a character; reap a destiny.” It all begins with a thought, which can ultimately shape our destiny. Satan knows that if he can control our thoughts, he can control us.

When the Devil approached Eve, her mind was not focused on the things of God. Had it been, she could have more effectively resisted temptation. When we hide God’s Word in our hearts, it becomes a powerful resource that enables us to resist temptation effectively.
