A fishing trip on Toledo Bend Lake turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Tuesday, May 28th, when a wave capsized a boat, leaving two dead and four survivors clinging to the overturned vessel.
The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that emergency services received a call about a boat in distress near Pirates Cove shortly before noon. According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), a large wave struck the pontoon boat, causing it to flip over and sink.
The brave boat guide managed to contact emergency services after the incident. Thankfully, rescue crews arrived on the scene around 1 p.m. and found the guide along with three passengers clinging desperately to the overturned hull. Sadly, two other individuals were reported missing.
The LDWF later located and identified the deceased victims as Macy Richard, 27, and Jerilyn Hebert, 57, both from Opelousas, Louisiana. Authorities confirmed they were mother and daughter.
The survivors are currently recovering from the ordeal. No details about their identities or the extent of their injuries have been released.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Richard, Ms. Hebert, their loved ones, and all those affected by this terrible accident. May they find comfort and strength during this incredibly difficult time. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the LDWF and emergency personnel for their swift response and rescue efforts.
