Carencro, LA – Dr. Steven T. Castille, head of CAST NEWS, recently shared essential insights on promoting health and wellness through diet, in alignment with the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2024. As stewards of God’s creation, it is our responsibility to nourish our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Nourishing Our Bodies with God’s Bounty
The USDA’s Dietary Guidelines emphasize a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Incorporating a variety of lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts is also recommended. These guidelines remind us of the biblical principle of eating in moderation and making wise choices, as seen in Proverbs 25:27: “It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep.”
Variety: God’s Provision in Diversity
Why is it important to eat a variety of foods? Different foods provide different combinations of nutrients necessary for our health. A balanced diet reflects the diversity of God’s creation, ensuring we receive all the nutrients our bodies need. As Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven,” including the food we eat to sustain our health.
Choosing Whole Foods: Honoring God’s Creation
A key aspect of a healthy diet is focusing on whole foods rather than processed or pre-prepared foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean proteins are the building blocks of a diet that honors our bodies as temples of God. Whole foods, as provided by God’s creation, offer the purity and nourishment our bodies need. Genesis 1:29 says, “Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.'”
The Perils of Processed Foods
Processed and pre-prepared foods often contain added colors, flavors, artificial preservatives, salt, and sugars, which can detract from their nutritional value and lead to health issues. Proverbs 23:20-21 warns, “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” This scripture highlights the importance of moderation and making healthy choices to avoid detrimental health outcomes.
