Lafayette Parish Acquires Land for Northeast Regional Library

Lafayette Parish has successfully acquired six acres of land designated for the long-awaited Northeast Regional Library. This new library will be built in an underserved area of the city, providing much-needed resources to the community. The purchase was finalized on May 23 for $339,000, securing the property at 100 Shadow Bluff Drive near Louisiana Avenue.

Bridging the Divide with Literacy and Learning

In a region physically separated from other libraries by Evangeline Thruway and interstates, this new library stands as a beacon of hope and progress. Alton Trahan, a member of the library exploratory committee, emphasized the opportunity to increase reading and literacy near Northside High School and J.W. Faulk Elementary School. “It’s going to have such a huge impact,” he said. The importance of education and literacy is echoed in the Bible, where Proverbs 4:7 states, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Community Hope and Perseverance

Nureaka Ross, who also served on the exploratory committee, expressed her happiness to see progress. “My community has waited too long for the library they need and deserve,” she said, hoping for expedited progress to overcome the barriers to literacy. Her perseverance is reminiscent of Romans 5:4, which teaches, “And endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”

Leadership and Commitment

City Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux has been a steadfast advocate for the library project. Having previously secured $8 million for the new library, he returned to the council motivated to see this project through. “I applaud this measure, but I reserve celebration for ground breaking and a future ribbon cutting,” he stated, determined to overcome any further delays. His dedication reflects Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”

Overcoming Obstacles and Moving Forward

The journey to this point has not been easy. Previous obstacles included reallocation of funds and unsuccessful attempts to lease space. However, the commitment to building a new library prevailed, and the library board’s vote in August 2022 to buy land has finally led to a successful purchase. This persistence and dedication mirror Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
