Delicious summer fruits like peaches, plums, and nectarines might do more than satisfy your sweet tooth—they could also play a role in fighting metabolic syndrome. This condition is characterized by a cluster of health problems, including high blood sugar, increased abdominal fat, elevated cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. Together, these issues significantly raise the risk of developing serious diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Research conducted by Texas A&M AgriLife and presented at the American Chemical Society’s 2012 National Meeting revealed that stone fruits contain bioactive compounds with potential health benefits. According to Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, a food scientist involved in the study, these fruits are rich in phenolic compounds, a type of antioxidant known for its ability to combat inflammation and oxidative stress. These compounds can target multiple components of metabolic syndrome, potentially reducing its overall impact.
Phenolic compounds are not just beneficial for reducing inflammation but may also have a positive effect on fat storage and insulin sensitivity
