Hearts of Hope- A Local Organization Fights Against Human Trafficking in Acadiana

Lafayette, LA – In an eye-opening interview with CAST News, Audrie Outlaw, a representative of Hearts of Hope, shed light on the harsh realities of human trafficking in the Acadiana region and the efforts being made to support survivors.

Hearts of Hope is dedicated to providing education, advocacy, and survivor services for victims of sexual violence, including minors who have been trafficked. Outlaw, who serves as the human trafficking regional care coordinator, works closely with adolescents who have experienced human trafficking.

According to Outlaw, two main types of trafficking are prevalent: labor trafficking, where individuals are forced to work without proper compensation, and the more common familial trafficking, where family members exploit children, often in exchange for money or drugs. Shockingly, some victims are as young as two or three years old.

“We do this work because we want to make sure these children get the support they need to escape their situations and build better futures,” said Outlaw. She emphasized the importance of community awareness, encouraging people to watch for warning signs such as minors being accompanied by controlling adults, branding tattoos, or unusual behavior in public places.

To combat this crisis, Hearts of Hope collaborates with third-party advocacy agencies to provide long-term support, such as education enrollment, counseling, and social services. Outlaw also stressed the dangers of online predators, explaining how traffickers manipulate vulnerable youth through social media and gaming platforms.
