In Pursuit of Peace

“Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” —Psalm 34:14 (NIV)

Peace Is Not Passive
In a world full of loud opinions, quick reactions, and constant movement, peace can seem elusive—like a distant luxury only found in rare moments of quiet. But Psalm 34:14 flips that perception on its head. It reminds us that peace isn’t something we simply wait for; it’s something we go after. To “seek peace and pursue it” means that peace requires intention, effort, and surrender. It is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God in the midst of it.

Turning from What Destroys Peace
The verse begins with a clear direction: “Turn from evil and do good.” Before peace can be pursued, there are things that must be released—anger, bitterness, envy, pride, or unforgiveness. These are peace-stealers, and they often go unnoticed until unrest becomes our default. Choosing to turn from evil isn’t always dramatic—it might be as simple as stepping away from gossip, resisting an urge to retaliate, or choosing truth over comfort. Doing good becomes the soil where peace takes root and begins to grow.

The Ongoing Pursuit
Seeking peace is more than a single act—it’s a lifestyle. We are called to pursue peace, to follow after it with perseverance. It means making peace with others a priority, even when it’s uncomfortable. It means fighting for peace within ourselves by guarding our hearts and minds with God’s truth. Peace is cultivated through forgiveness, humility, gratitude, and reliance on the Lord. And just like a runner on a long-distance path, the pursuit may be tiring at times—but it is always worth it.

Peace That Reflects God’s Character
God is a God of peace (Romans 15:33). When we seek peace, we reflect His nature. The pursuit of peace brings His presence into our lives and relationships in a tangible way. Jesus Himself said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). As His children, we are called to be people of reconciliation—bridging gaps, soothing wounds, and shining His light where there is conflict.

A Prayer for the Pursuit of Peace
Lord,
Teach me to be someone who seeks peace and pursues it—not just in quiet moments, but in my actions, my words, and my thoughts. Help me to recognize and turn from anything that keeps me from living in Your peace. Lead me into goodness, into kindness, into humility, and into truth. Let Your peace rule in my heart and flow through my life to bless others. Make me an instrument of peace in a world that desperately needs it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
