Iced Tea May Cool the Body, But Not Without Risk

LAFAYETTE, LA — As temperatures soar during summer months, many reach for a tall glass of iced tea. While refreshing and comforting, this seasonal favorite may carry hidden health concerns. Recent medical insights from Dr. John Milner of Loyola University Chicago warn that iced tea—especially black tea—contains high levels of oxalate, a chemical linked to the formation of kidney stones. Affecting roughly 10% of the U.S. population, kidney stones can lead to significant pain and urinary complications.

Wise Choices for Healthy Living

God’s Word encourages wisdom in every area of life, including what we consume. Proverbs 4:7 reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” While iced tea is not harmful for everyone, those prone to kidney stones are advised to limit or avoid it. The issue lies not only in the presence of oxalate in black tea, but in the large quantities consumed when served cold.

Stewarding the Body, God’s Temple

1 Corinthians 10:31 teaches, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Our bodies are entrusted to us by the Lord, and caring for them is a form of worship. By staying informed and making mindful decisions about what we drink, we demonstrate gratitude for the health and life God has given us.

Prayer for the Community

Gracious Father,
We thank You for the knowledge You provide through science and medicine. Help us to use this wisdom to protect the health You have entrusted to us. Guide our choices, bless our bodies, and heal those suffering from illness. May we glorify You in all we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
