Energy Efficiency Brings Healthier Homes and Families

Recent research highlights how caring for our homes not only conserves energy but also strengthens family health. Studies from the National Center for Healthy Housing in Maryland examined 248 households in major U.S. cities that received energy conservation improvements such as new insulation, efficient heating, and better ventilation. The results showed tangible health benefits: sinusitis decreased by 5%, hypertension dropped by 14%, and obesity by 11%. Families also reported reduced use of asthma medication, though further study is needed on asthma outcomes.

Healthy Homes, Healthy Lives

A similar study from New Zealand’s University of Otago confirmed these results, finding that children in homes with energy-efficient heating experienced better sleep, fewer illnesses, and improved allergy and wheezing symptoms. In older homes where insulation was added, families enjoyed better overall health and fewer sick days. These findings remind us that a safe and efficient home can be a place of both rest and restoration, echoing God’s design for families to flourish in their dwellings.
