A Season of Gratitude and Giving in Abbeville
ABBEVILLE, La. — As Thanksgiving approaches, the United Way of Acadiana is shining Christ’s love in Vermilion Parish by helping families prepare for the holiday season. At the organization’s Early Learning Center in Abbeville, the “Abbeville Day of Thanksgiving” brought together parents, children, and local community members for a celebration rooted in gratitude, compassion, and service.
This act of community support reflects the heart of Scripture: “Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” (Hebrews 13:16).
The event emphasized not only meeting physical needs, but also nurturing families spiritually, emotionally, and educationally—mirroring the holistic care Christ demonstrated during His earthly ministry.
Providing Early Care, Support, and Hope
The Early Learning Center offers free, high-quality education for children ages six weeks to three years old, along with vital support services for pregnant mothers. Families in Vermilion Parish receive vision, hearing, and dental screenings at no cost, as well as nutritional education and assistance for children with disabilities.
“We provide high-quality education for children ages six weeks to age three, and we also service pregnant moms,” said Macy Augustine-Green, Family and Community Specialist with United Way of Acadiana. “We support families throughout pregnancy and provide resources children need to grow, learn, and thrive.”
In moments like these, Matthew 19:14 comes alive: “Let the little children come to Me… for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” The center’s mission reflects Jesus’ heart for children and families, ensuring they are valued, supported, and equipped.
A Thanksgiving Meal Shared in Love
During the celebration, families joined their children for story time, turkey crafts, and a shared Thanksgiving meal—all free of charge. The highlight of the event was United Way’s annual Thanksgiving food drive, created to ensure Vermilion Parish families have access to a complete holiday meal despite financial challenges.
“Right now, more than ever, it is important to have a food drive for our families,” Augustine-Green said. “When children have access to nutritious food, they are happier, healthier and able to learn and grow.”
Each family received an insulated bag donated by Home Bank, filled with Thanksgiving essentials—turkey, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, vegetables, yams, rolls, dessert mix, and a beverage. Donations poured in from local individuals and businesses, demonstrating the generosity that defines the region.
This generosity echoes Proverbs 22:9: “The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.” Vermilion Parish has once again shown that a community grounded in compassion reflects God’s love in powerful ways.
A Community That Takes Care of Its Own
More than just a food drive, the event served as a reminder that Vermilion Parish stands united. “This event is just a small reminder that the communities within Vermilion Parish take care of their own,” Augustine-Green shared.
In a world where many families face uncertainty, this Thanksgiving gathering became a beacon of hope—proving that when communities work together, God’s love is made visible.
Prayer for the Community
Gracious Father,
We thank You for the compassion shown by the United Way of Acadiana and the volunteers who poured out love and service. Bless every family who received a meal and every child receiving education and care. Strengthen the hands of those who serve, inspire continued generosity, and meet the needs of all families in Vermilion Parish. May this Thanksgiving season be filled with Your peace, provision, and presence.
Amen.
