Compassion in Action on a Lafayette Morning
LAFAYETTE, La. — A simple act of kindness behind a local business has captured hearts across Acadiana and reminded the community of God’s call to care for all His creation. Billy Guilbeaux, owner of Twin’s Burgers and Sweets in Lafayette, is being praised after rescuing a small owl he found lying on the ground near his business. What could have been overlooked instead became a powerful moment of compassion, faith, and swift action. Scripture teaches, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals” (Proverbs 12:10), a verse brought to life through this quiet but meaningful rescue.
A Moment That Required Immediate Action
According to Guilbeaux, the owl appeared to be “hangin’ on to life.” Along with another man, Karl, Billy discovered the bird in an alley behind the business. Recognizing the urgency, Billy turned to social media for guidance, asking the community what steps to take. Understanding the owl needed warmth and protection, the men carefully placed it in a box to help stabilize it before transporting it to Lafayette Veterinary Clinic. Their response reflected the biblical reminder that “Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).
From Local Clinic to Wildlife Care
The staff at Lafayette Veterinary Clinic quickly stepped in, assessing the owl and contacting Acadiana Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation, Inc. for specialized care. The organization later confirmed the bird was an adult Eastern Screech-Owl. Diagnosed with severe head trauma and hypothermia, the owl received warming treatment and medication, offering hope for recovery. This collaboration between citizens, veterinarians, and wildlife professionals showed how community cooperation can bring healing — “Two are better than one… for if they fall, one will lift up his fellow” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10).
A Reminder of God’s Creation and Design
Eastern Screech-Owls are small but striking birds commonly found in wooded areas and neighborhoods with mature trees. Though their loud nighttime screech can be startling, they play an important role in the ecosystem. Known to nest in tree cavities or man-made boxes, these owls often mate for life, reflecting a unique design within creation. Genesis 1:25 reminds believers that God saw all He made and declared it good, including even the smallest creatures often hidden from view.
Prayer, Faith, and Hope for Restoration
What deeply moved viewers online was not only the rescue itself, but the prayer offered over the owl before it was transported. In a world often marked by hurry and indifference, the simple act of pausing to pray spoke volumes. The owl’s survival is credited to quick thinking, compassion, and faith in action. While its future remains in the hands of rehabilitators, the hope is that it will one day return to the wild — perhaps even soaring again near the place where mercy met need.
A Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the reminder that Your care extends to all creation. Bless Billy, Karl, the veterinary staff, and wildlife rehabilitators who acted with compassion and urgency. Strengthen our community to be attentive to the needs around us, both great and small. May this story inspire hearts to reflect Your love, stewardship, and mercy in everyday moments. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
