Stories That Cross Borders: Cinema on the Bayou Returns to Lafayette in 2026

Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival will once again bring the world to Acadiana as the internationally recognized festival returns January 21–28, 2026. For eight days, Lafayette will serve as a gathering place for filmmakers, artists, and audiences from across the United States, Canada, and around the globe. More than 150 narrative, documentary, and animated films will be screened, many in the French language, reflecting the region’s deep cultural roots. Scripture reminds us, “Let us tell of His wonderful works” (Psalm 78:4), a calling echoed through the power of storytelling on screen.

A Vision Born in Louisiana, Shared with the World

Founded in 2006 by Louisiana native and filmmaker Pat Mire, Cinema on the Bayou has grown into a respected international juried festival. Mire, who continues to serve as artistic director, envisioned a space where stories from diverse cultures could be shared, understood, and celebrated. Presented by the Cinema on the Bayou Film Society, a 501(c)(3) Louisiana nonprofit organization, the festival remains committed to elevating voices and perspectives that might otherwise go unheard. “Write the vision; make it plain” (Habakkuk 2:2) speaks to the clarity of purpose that has guided the festival for nearly two decades.

Celebrating Creativity and Human Experience

Each year, the festival features World, U.S., and Louisiana premieres, drawing filmmakers and industry professionals to Lafayette. Official film selections will be announced in December, with a full schedule released in early January 2026. The event offers more than entertainment; it provides an opportunity for reflection on the human condition—joy, struggle, hope, and redemption. As Jesus often taught through parables, stories have the power to reveal truth. “He spoke the word to them as much as they could understand” (Mark 4:33).

Cité des Arts Hosts a Global Gathering

Festival events will take place at Cité des Arts, located at 109 Vine Street in Lafayette, with screenings and activities scheduled from noon to 11 p.m. on January 26, 27, and 28, with additional events throughout the week. The venue will welcome filmmakers, students, and community members into a shared space of creativity and conversation. This gathering reflects the biblical call to fellowship: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24).

Art, Culture, and Faith in Conversation

While Cinema on the Bayou is not a faith-based festival, its mission aligns with Christian values of understanding, compassion, and cultural stewardship. By showcasing stories from around the world, the festival invites audiences to see others through a lens of dignity and grace. “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right… think about such things” (Philippians 4:8). In a divided world, shared stories can become bridges of empathy and peace.

Prayer for the Festival and Community

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of creativity and the power of stories to connect hearts across cultures. Bless the filmmakers, organizers, and attendees of Cinema on the Bayou. May the stories shared inspire understanding, healing, and hope. Protect all who travel to and from the festival, and bless the Lafayette community as it welcomes the world. May every story reflect truth and lead us closer to love and compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
