LAFAYETTE, La. — As April marks Parkinson’s Awareness Month, one local woman is stepping forward in faith and courage to shine a light on a disease that is often misunderstood. Linda Rome, a retired teacher and lifelong resident, is using her voice to inspire others after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease four years ago. What once felt overwhelming has now become a testimony of perseverance, echoing 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
FROM DIAGNOSIS TO PURPOSE
Rome recalls the shock of her diagnosis, a moment that changed the course of her life. Yet over time, she found peace in acceptance and strength through faith. Now embracing the message “Stop Hiding and Start Living,” she is encouraging others facing similar challenges to step out of fear and into purpose. Her journey reflects Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.” Rather than allowing the disease to define her, Rome is choosing to live boldly, trusting in God’s plan.
RAISING AWARENESS AND SUPPORTING RESEARCH
Determined to make a difference, Rome is organizing a local fundraiser benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a leading organization dedicated to advancing research and finding a cure. Through her efforts, she hopes to increase understanding and support for those living with Parkinson’s. The condition, which affects the nervous system and reduces dopamine levels in the brain, can cause tremors, fatigue, and difficulty with movement. Rome emphasizes that no two experiences are alike, reminding others of the importance of compassion and awareness. Her work embodies Galatians 6:2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
TURNING PAIN INTO PURPOSE
Rome’s story is one of transformation—turning personal struggle into a mission that uplifts others. By sharing her experience publicly, she is breaking down stigma and offering encouragement to those who may feel isolated. Her courage mirrors Romans 5:3-4: “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Through her testimony, Rome is reminding the community that even in hardship, God can bring forth purpose and hope.
A COMMUNITY CALLED TO COMPASSION
The Lafayette community is rallying around Rome’s efforts, demonstrating the power of unity in the face of adversity. Friends, family, and supporters are joining together to raise funds and awareness, standing as a testament to the love and care that defines the region. Events like this serve as a reminder that no one walks through trials alone. As written in Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Together, the community is stronger.
LIVING WITH HOPE AND LOOKING AHEAD
Though Parkinson’s disease is progressive, Rome remains steadfast in her hope for the future. She continues to advocate for research, believing that breakthroughs are possible and that God’s healing power is ever-present. Her message is clear: life does not end with a diagnosis—it transforms. With faith as her foundation, she is choosing to live fully, inspiring others to do the same.
