Faith in the Midst of Suffering

In one of the most powerful testimonies of gratitude under pressure, Corrie ten Boom’s story from The Hiding Place continues to inspire believers worldwide. Held in the Ravensbrück concentration camp during World War II, Corrie and her sister Betsie endured unimaginable conditions—including barracks infested with fleas. When Betsie urged Corrie to thank God even for the fleas, Corrie resisted. But Betsie reminded her of 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Fleas That Brought Freedom

Though it seemed absurd at the time, the sisters later discovered that the fleas kept the guards away from their barracks. This unexpected protection allowed them to hold Bible studies and share the gospel with other women—without interference. What seemed like a curse became a divine shield. Romans 8:28 affirms, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Even the smallest irritations can serve a greater purpose when surrendered to God.

Gratitude That Transforms Perspective

The command to give thanks “in everything” doesn’t mean we rejoice in tragedy, but that we recognize God’s sovereignty through it. Gratitude is not denial—it’s declaration. It declares that God is still on the throne, still working, and still worthy of praise. Psalm 34:1 says, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Lord, teach us to give thanks in every circumstance. Help us to trust Your plan even when we don’t understand the pain. May our hearts be filled with gratitude, knowing You are working all things together for good. Use our trials to bring hope to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
