IBERIA PARISH, La. — A new partnership between the Aviation Academy of Louisiana and New Mexico State University is positioning Louisiana at the forefront of next-generation aviation research, creating opportunities for students while helping shape the future of air travel in America.
The collaboration will focus on unmanned and highly automated aircraft systems, advancing research in autonomous aviation, future airspace integration, and advanced air mobility. Leaders involved in the project believe the partnership could eventually influence how federal aviation laws and regulations are written in the years ahead.
The Aviation Academy of Louisiana, the only Part 141 FAA-certified flight school in Acadiana and one of only four in the state, will serve as a testing and training ground where innovation moves from the laboratory into real-world flight operations.
A New Frontier in Aviation
Craig Simon, president of the academy, said the aviation industry is entering territory never explored before. Researchers and instructors are studying possibilities that include aircraft operating with little to no onboard crew while maintaining safe and effective travel systems.
The work represents more than technological advancement; it also reflects mankind’s God-given creativity and ability to build for the future. Scripture reminds believers in Exodus 35:31-32 that God gives people “skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts” to accomplish meaningful work. In many ways, this new partnership demonstrates how innovation can be used to serve communities and improve transportation safety.
Officials say the research being conducted in New Iberia could provide critical data that federal agencies may one day use to establish laws and certification standards for autonomous aviation systems.
Training the Next Generation
Beau Prine, general manager of the academy, explained that the program uses what leaders call a “lab-to-flight-line” model. The goal is to connect university research directly to operational aviation environments using helicopters, airplanes, drones, and advanced simulators.
Students training at the academy already gain hands-on experience through modern aircraft fleets and state-of-the-art simulation technology. One of the academy’s advanced simulators mirrors the helicopters commonly used for offshore operations in the Gulf of Mexico, preparing students for real-world industry demands before they ever leave the ground.
Prine said the simulator also supports a partnership with aviation company cadet programs, helping helicopter students safely practice Gulf flight operations in a controlled environment.
For many young people across Acadiana, the academy is opening doors to careers in one of the fastest-growing sectors of aviation. Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings.” Educators believe the specialized training now available in Iberia Parish will equip students with valuable skills that can impact industries across the nation.
Faith, Vision, and Community Impact
Community leaders say the partnership is also expected to strengthen economic development in South Louisiana by attracting innovation, educational opportunities, and high-tech career pathways to the region.
As aviation technology evolves, officials emphasize the importance of balancing progress with responsibility, safety, and ethical leadership. The academy’s research efforts are designed not only to advance science but also to ensure future aviation systems operate safely for communities nationwide.
The partnership between Louisiana and New Mexico stands as a reminder that when education, innovation, and vision come together, communities can help shape the future for generations to come.
Prayer for the Community
Heavenly Father, we pray for the students, educators, researchers, and aviation leaders involved in this groundbreaking work. Grant them wisdom, protection, and integrity as they develop new technology that may impact the future of transportation. Bless the communities of Iberia Parish and Acadiana with opportunity, growth, and unity. May all advancements be used responsibly and for the good of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
