A Step Forward for Downtown Lafayette
Lafayette Consolidated Government leaders, community members, and local stakeholders recently gathered to celebrate the completion of Phase Two of the Downtown Sidewalk Improvements Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the intersection of South Washington and West Vermilion streets.
The project represents another significant investment in the heart of Lafayette, focusing on improving pedestrian safety, accessibility, and overall connectivity throughout the downtown area. City officials say the upgrades will modernize sidewalks and improve accessibility at six key intersections, making the area safer and more welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
The improvements are part of a broader effort to revitalize downtown Lafayette while preserving its historic character and preparing it for future growth.
Improving Access for All Residents
Mayor-President Monique Boulet emphasized the importance of addressing aging infrastructure while ensuring that public spaces remain accessible to everyone.
“Downtown infrastructure, some of it is over 100 years old,” Boulet explained. “Going back and refurbishing and bringing the ADA compliance to standard is key.”
The upgrades include improved sidewalk surfaces, enhanced curb ramps, and better accommodations for individuals with disabilities. In addition, the project improves bicycle accessibility, creating safer pathways for cyclists traveling through the downtown district.
Community leaders believe these improvements will help strengthen local businesses, encourage more pedestrian traffic, and create a more inclusive environment for all who live, work, and visit downtown Lafayette.
