A Historic Treasure Receives New Life
Construction barriers and caution tape may currently surround the Eunice City Library, but city leaders want residents to know the beloved landmark is far from closing its doors forever. Instead, the building is undergoing a major renovation project designed to preserve its historic character while preparing it to serve future generations.
Mayor Scott Fontenot said the project has been years in the making, tracing back nearly eight years to when Eunice separated from the Opelousas Unit Public Library and established its own library system. Since then, city officials have worked toward a vision of modernizing the facility while honoring its rich history.
The renovation project, funded through local sales tax revenue, represents a significant investment in education, community engagement, and the preservation of one of Eunice’s most cherished public spaces.
Preserving the Past While Building for Tomorrow
The first phase of construction focuses on exterior improvements that will restore architectural features hidden for decades. Workers are removing later additions to the structure and revealing original windows, entrances, and design elements that many residents have never seen.
Mayor Fontenot explained that renovations will include restoring the building’s historic appearance, adding a new roof, rebuilding a wraparound balcony, and completing additional interior upgrades during the second phase of the project.
For library staff and patrons, watching the building’s transformation has been both exciting and emotional. Children’s programmer and community outreach coordinator Jenna Donaldson described the experience as having a front-row seat to history.
As construction crews uncover original features hidden for more than half a century, residents are gaining a renewed appreciation for the city’s heritage and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
A Vital Resource for the Community
Although construction is underway, library services have not stopped. Operations have temporarily moved across the street to a satellite location, allowing residents to continue accessing books, computers, internet services, printing, and document faxing.
Donaldson expressed gratitude that city leaders recognized the library’s importance to the community. She noted that many residents rely on library resources for daily needs, including job searches, educational opportunities, communication services, and technology access.
Libraries often serve as much more than buildings filled with books. They become places of learning, connection, and opportunity. Proverbs 1:5 teaches, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning.” Community leaders say the Eunice Library continues to fulfill that mission even while renovations are underway.
The library remains a place where children discover the joy of reading, students complete assignments, and adults gain access to resources that help improve their lives.
A Christian Perspective on Stewardship and Legacy
From a Christian perspective, preserving important community institutions reflects biblical principles of stewardship and faithful management of resources entrusted to us.
Psalm 78:4 reminds believers, “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.” While libraries preserve books and historical records, they also help preserve the stories, values, and knowledge that shape communities.
Eunice Friends of the Library President Deanne Daigle joined many local residents in expressing excitement about the project. For supporters, the renovations represent more than construction—they represent a commitment to ensuring future generations can benefit from the same educational opportunities and community connections that have served residents for decades.
Looking Ahead with Hope
Mayor Fontenot emphasized that the project is about protecting both a valuable community resource and an important piece of Eunice history. City leaders expect renovations to be completed by the end of the year, giving residents a restored facility that honors the past while embracing the future.
As the work continues, the community remains hopeful that the renovated library will stand as a symbol of learning, unity, and progress for generations to come.
