Faith, Hope, and Healing: Lafayette’s Vision for Sickle Cell Care

A Young Life Marked by Courage and Faith

LAFAYETTE, La. — While many teenagers spend their days in classrooms and on athletic fields, 15-year-old Jadis Phillips fights a battle few can see. Living with sickle cell disease (SCD), Jadis attends Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy virtually because chronic fatigue and painful health crises often make a traditional school day impossible.

“It’s different than how other kids are. I can’t do certain things,” Jadis shared.

Despite the daily challenges, Jadis considers herself an “SCD warrior,” a title embraced by many living with or supporting those affected by the inherited blood disorder. Her courage reflects the promise of Isaiah 41:10, where God declares, “Fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.” Her story is a testimony of perseverance in the face of hardship.

A Family’s Journey Through Pain and Perseverance

Jadis’ grandmother, Earline Phillips, has faithfully cared for her granddaughter while carrying the memory of her own daughter, Shareall Phillips, who passed away in 2013 after a lifelong struggle with sickle cell disease.

For years, Earline witnessed medical misunderstandings that often delayed treatment and caused unnecessary suffering. Too often, patients with sickle cell disease have faced misconceptions about their pain instead of receiving the compassion and urgent care they desperately need.

Yet through grief and hardship, Earline continues to trust God while raising her grandchildren. Her steadfast love reflects Galatians 6:2, which calls believers to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

A Vision to Transform Care in Acadiana

Hope is growing in Acadiana through a proposed sickle cell transfusion center spearheaded by the Rev. Abram Freeman and the Lafayette-based Acts of Love Foundation, in partnership with the Sickle Cell Association of South Louisiana.

The planned center would provide specialized transfusions, rapid pain treatment, education, and supportive services much closer to home. Freeman also envisions affordable housing for families affected by sickle cell disease, helping ease both medical and financial burdens.

“One of the keys to survival with sickle cell is fast pain relief,” Freeman explained, emphasizing that timely treatment greatly improves quality of life.

The initiative has received encouraging support from community leaders and healthcare professionals, with hopes of opening a fully operational center by 2028. The project reflects Christ’s example of compassionate care found in Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Faith Inspires a Future Filled with Hope

Although medical advances—including groundbreaking gene therapies—offer new hope, advocates agree that education, awareness, and accessible healthcare remain critical. For Jadis and families like hers, a local transfusion center would mean shorter travel, faster treatment, and renewed confidence that compassionate care is within reach.

As Jadis prepares to begin high school this fall, she looks toward the future with courage. Her journey reminds us that every life has God-given value and that communities are strongest when they come together to care for their most vulnerable neighbors.

As Romans 12:12 encourages believers, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Those words continue to inspire families, caregivers, healthcare workers, and advocates working together to bring healing and hope to Acadiana.
